SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making with Barbara Green
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT – Join Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop.\nAdditional date added by popular demand! \nParticipants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. The top of the basket is finished with a riveted handle before applying the rim. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. \nThe basket and wooden components are to be stained at home. When dried\, the harness\, skids and base are applied. Barbara will show how to do this at the workshop. Stain instructions are included in the handout. \n\n→All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day.\n→Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 8 hours.)\n→Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nSpots are limited\, and this workshop often sells out. Early registration is recommended. \n  \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband.

(You do not need to pay admission to pick up toys.) A link to a digital gallery of the stuffed animals’ camp adventures will be provided to attendees. SUMMARY:Coney Mountain with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:Coney Mountain rises between the villages of Tupper Lake and Long Lake on the border between Franklin and Hamilton Counties. The trail is a 1.1 walk to the summit and passes through beautiful woods\, including a stand of old-growth sugar maples. The 360 degree view from the open\, rocky summit is stunning. Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to best protect this Park. Elevation gain is a little more than 523 feet. Altitude at the summit is 2267 feet. \n  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscapes and archaeological sites\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHe has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and more\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. His passion for biodiversity has also led to the co-discovery of six new scorpion species. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences. Dr. Stewart is a frequent media contributor and continues tree-ring research in the Adirondacks\, often hiking with his family.

SUMMARY:Huntington Forest with Allison Brusa
DESCRIPTION:Beginning at the Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center\, this program explores the complexity and ecological significance of mature and old-growth forests. We will then continue to the base of Goodnow Mountain to examine climate-adaptive forest management in action\, including research areas designed to support the migration of species better suited to future conditions. \nThis walk is in two parts. All participants will meet at the Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center for Part 1\, and those wishing to join Part 2 at Goodnow Mountain after will drive to the trailhead. \nPlease note that Part 2 will require participants hike about 500ft at a steep incline\, and walk another 50ft off trail. \nAllison Brusa is a forester with SUNY ESF in the Adirondacks. Education is central to her work\, and she is passionate about making forest science accessible and experiential. Drawing on a background in ecology and research\, she helps connect ecological processes and active management decisions\, inviting people to see the forest through the lenses of both a naturalist and a forester.

A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscapes and archaeological sites\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHe has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and more\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. His passion for biodiversity has also led to the co-discovery of six new scorpion species. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences. Dr. Stewart is a frequent media contributor and continues tree-ring research in the Adirondacks\, often hiking with his family.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll walk a couple of miles along beautiful trails and among fine old trees\, including eastern hemlocks\, red spruce\, northern white-cedar\, sugar maples\, and yellow birch. The beautiful woods here will give us a chance to work on tree identification and give us a chance to look for forest birds and amphibians. Rich Lake and associated streams will offer further beauty and interest. The Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center is run by SUNY-ESF and hosts a variety of excellent programs year-round. \n  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

DESCRIPTION:Explore what may lie beneath the surface at ADKX during a day of hands-on discovery focused on archaeological fieldwork. SUNY Potsdam will be conducting a field school for student archaeologists throughout the month of June at ADKX. \nVisitors can connect with student archaeologists at an interactive Exploration Station\, try their hand at cleaning and processing artifacts\, and learn how materials are documented and interpreted. \nPre-registered guided site tours and “Shadow the Dig Crew” experiences offer a closer look at active excavation work\, while a family-friendly Kids’ Dig Zone invites younger visitors to take part in their own mock dig. Open to curious minds of all ages (with some experiences age limited) this event embraces the process of discovery! General Admission is required to attend either program. Members always receive free admission. \nShadow the Dig Crew\nTake part in the Shadow the Dig Crew Experience\, a pre-registered\, small-group program offering a guided introduction to active excavation work. \nGroup size is limited to 8 people per session to ensure safety and help preserve the integrity of the dig site. Excavation areas may be located off of Center Campus and could involve hiking up or down steep\, uneven terrain—participants should be prepared for a potentially strenuous walk and use their own judgement when registering; sneakers or durable closed-toed shoes are required.  \nDesigned for ages 14 and up\, this experience invites visitors to join the archaeological team in the field to observe techniques\, assist with basic tasks\, and learn how finds are documented and handled. Pre-registration is required. \n\n  \nGuided Excavation Site Tour\nJoin a guided excavation site tour with Dr. Hadley Kruczek-Aaron for an up-close look at active or recently excavated dig sites on or around the ADKX campus. \nDesigned for ages 14 and up\, pre-registration is required\, and groups are capped at 12 people to ensure safety and to protect the integrity of the site. SUMMARY:Working All the Angles Photography Workshop with Carl Heilman II
DESCRIPTION:Join Adirondack photographer\, Carl Heilman II\, for a daylong photography workshop that will help inspire you to explore a range of shooting options to expand your photographic creativity.\nThe day will begin with a morning classroom discussion where we’ll cover camera setup options plus details and questions about the basic photography principles—exposure\, motion\, depth of field. Carl will also discuss photo composition and equipment and lens options to help folks more easily explore various shooting angles when on location. \nDuring the afternoon we will experiment with the covered techniques along with different ways of looking at subjects while going to various exhibits around the museum grounds. We’ll also walk the trail to scenic Minnow Pond as long as the weather cooperates. \nParticipants should bring along a camera\, tripod\, a variety of lenses and focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto\, close-up (macro) equipment they might have\, and perhaps a solid ND filter. There are no specific requirements\, but a larger range of equipment choices will offer a greater variety of creative shooting options. (For example\, in his standard camera bag\, Carl carries 2 DSLR mirrorless camera bodies\, a 14-24\, 24-120\, 70-300 zooms\, a 16mm fisheye lens for unique shooting angles\, extension tubes for close-up options\, and a variable solid ND filter.) \n\n→Workshop open to all abilities.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food and snacks for the day. DESCRIPTION:Carol Marie Vossler\, an artist and papermaker\, will lead you through making a triangle lantern out of handmade paper and stencils.\nYou’ll be cutting and folding as part of the process. Using stencils\, you can cut shapes with either an Xacto knife or a pin tool\, each offering unique effects\, before assembling your lantern. SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making with Barbara Green
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! – ADDITIONAL DATE AVAILABLE\, AUGUST 29 | Click here to register! \nJoin Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop.\nParticipants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. The top of the basket is finished with a riveted handle before applying the rim. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. \nThe basket and wooden components are to be stained at home. When dried\, the harness\, skids and base are applied. Barbara will show how to do this at the workshop. Stain instructions are included in the handout. \n\n→All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day.\n→Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 8 hours.)\n→Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nSpots are limited\, and this workshop often sells out. Early registration is recommended. \n  \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband.
