Learn about the history of the trail and about some of the flora and fauna that can be seen on the hike. Then\, prepare for an extended outing on the water in our historic vessels.* Paddle and row across the pond with Shane and Doreen and learn what lives beneath the surface. DESCRIPTION:The ADKX continues to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Northville-Placid Trail with our temporary exhibition\, Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid Trail and through a members-only hike. \nJoin ADKX Conservator Doreen Alessi-Holmes as well as Shane Holmes and Matthew Waligora (NYS Licensed Guides) for a 2+ mile round trip hike on a portion of Section 8 of the NPT. We’ll arrive at the secluded and quiet Catlin Bay on Long Lake. Directions will be provided upon registration to the trail head located just east of the town center. Doreen will share interesting facts about the history of the trail and about the behind-the-scenes work entailed in creating the Trail Makers exhibition. Afterwards\, celebrate the rewarding hike by enjoying an ice cream with your guides and fellow members.

DESCRIPTION:Wet felt a small vessel or stone from wool fibers using the wet felting along with the resist technique. The combed wool fibers mesh together through the movement of your hands\, water and olive oil soap\, and warmth. The resulting stone will measure 5-7”. \n\nAll materials and tools will be provided.\nParticipants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is NOT included in the workshop fee.\nComfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nRegistered participants must meet in the ADKX Visitor Center by 9:15. \nCancellation Policy: If the Adirondack Experience is required to cancel the workshop due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances\, customers will receive a full refund. There will be no refunds for no-shows. \n  \nAbout Workshop Leader: \nJoy Muller-McCoola is a textile artist using wet felted wool. SUMMARY:Working All the Angles Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:**This workshop is SOLD OUT** \nJoin Adirondack photographer\, Carl Heilman II\, for a daylong photography workshop that will help inspire you to explore a range of shooting options to expand your photographic creativity. The day will begin with a morning classroom discussion where we’ll cover camera setup options plus details and questions about the basic photography principles—exposure\, motion\, and depth of field. Carl will also discuss equipment and lens options to help folks more easily explore various shooting angles when on location. \nDuring the afternoon we will experiment with the covered techniques along with different ways of looking at subjects while going to various exhibits around the museum grounds. We’ll also walk the trail to scenic Minnow Pond as long as the weather cooperates. \nParticipants should bring along a camera\, tripod\, a variety of lenses and focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto\, and any close-up (macro) equipment they might have. There are no specific requirements\, but a larger range of equipment choices will offer a greater variety of shooting options. (For example\, in his standard camera bag\, Carl carries 2 DSLR mirrorless camera bodies\, a 14-24\, 24-120\, 70-300 zooms\, plus a 50mm lens\, and extension tubes for close-up options. He includes his fisheye lens for unique shooting situations.) \n\n–Workshop open to all abilities.\n–Participants are welcome to bring food and snacks for the day. Pre-ordered bagged lunches are available with registration ($15). DESCRIPTION:NYS Forest Rangers have countless roles to fill: daring rescuers\, committed conservationists\, rules enforcers\, direction givers\, and tireless educators. Join us for an evening of stories from retired and current forest rangers—those whose intimate knowledge of the region is boundless. Through the evening program\, the group will share tales of humor and of heroics as well as tips and lessons for all of us who cherish time on the trails of the Adirondacks. \nThis program is free for all (donations welcome). \nFeatured NYS Forest Rangers:  \n\nGreg George was a NYS Forest Ranger for 33 years starting in 1977 in Otsego County\, NY. He\, along with his wife\, Jean\, son\, Joel\, and daughter\, Maggie\, served the public in Blue Mountain Lake from 1984 to 2010. \n  \n\nDell Jeffery followed a nontraditional path to become a Forest Ranger. He enlisted in the Army in 1976 and was on active duty for three years. In 1983 he became a full-time National Guardsman in Syracuse. He retired from the National Guard in 1996. He then worked for the Office of Children and Family Services for the State of New York leading adjudicated teenagers on wilderness trips year-round in the Adirondack Park.  During those years\, he spent 150 days a year\, winter and summer\, camping and leading adventure skills. He became a Forest Ranger 2004\, graduated the Forest Ranger Academy in 2005 at the age of 50. In 2007 he became the Newcomb Ranger covering the Southern High Peaks.  He retired in 2017; it was time to give someone else the opportunity to enjoy the best job in world. \n\nLt. Megan LaPierre has been with the NYS Forest Rangers since 2007. She started in Dutchess County (where both of her children were born) and transferred to the Adirondacks in 2014. Her Rangers districts up here have been the Town of Franklin\, the St. Regis Canoe Area\, and the High Peaks. She became the Lt. for Zone A in 2021 and is still in that position. She is also a lead instructor for the Rangers statewide Medical program in which she trains all of the Rangers throughout the state. Mother of 2 (4 if you include her fur babies) and married to Joe LaPierre\, which provides endless adventures outside of Ranger world! \n\nJason Scott grew up in the Catskill Mountains where he enjoyed hiking\, skiing\, camping\, trout fishing\, and hunting. He graduated from SUNY ESF with a BA in Environmental Studies and was hired as a NYS Forest Ranger in 2004. Jason spent the first three years of his career working in the lower Hudson Valley and transferred to Hamilton County in 2007. He lives in Blue Mountain Lake with his wife Cat Scott and their two beautiful girls Charlee and Kylee.

SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:THIS DATE IS SOLD OUT! \nNew date added on September 1st. Click here to register. \nJoin Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \n\n–All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n–Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at SPACE Old Forge and L Post Rustics in Lake Placid. DESCRIPTION:Ferd’s Bog Trail begins along Uncas Road between the villages of Raquette Lake and Eagle Bay. The trail is short (0.7 mile one-way) but rich in interest. Ferd’s is best known for its boreal birds\, including the Canada jay and boreal chickadee\, and its wildflowers. An unhurried\, easy ramble will give us a chance to savor the fauna and flora. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register.  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

DESCRIPTION:Coney Mountain rises between the villages of Tupper Lake and Long Lake on the border between Franklin and Hamilton Counties. The trail is a 1.1 walk to the summit and passes through beautiful woods\, including a stand of old-growth sugar maples. The 360 degree view from the open\, rocky summit is stunning. Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to best protect this Park. Elevation gain is a little more than 523 feet. SUMMARY:Buck Mountain with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:This rigorous\, 2.4 mile (roundtrip) hike will bring us to the newly opened fire tower on Buck Mountain\, near the Town of Long Lake. From atop of fire tower take in stunning views of the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area and Little Tupper Lake. This trail gains 500 feet in elevation\, mostly on the latter half of the hike. This outing is intended for folks seeking a moderate-to-challenging outdoor activity. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register.  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.
