This fellowship program aims to enrich the professional skills of emerging museum educators and is specifically designed for recent college graduates or current graduate students from communities that have been historically underrepresented in arts organizations because of educational and economic disadvantage and ethnic background. As the core component of this program, participants will gain in-depth experience implementing programs for the K-12 audience, which includes bringing museum presentations to schools throughout its twelve county service area through ADKX’s unparalleled school outreach program. Participants will also have the opportunity to lead virtual programing through the museum’s Cisco WebEx system. Opportunities to research, develop, and evaluate new and existing programs, and lend a unique voice to program narratives are also key components to the program. Regular mentoring sessions with a museum consultant round out the program. ADKX offers a unique opportunity for students to learn in an incomparable setting and to develop both a better understanding and a foundational level of experience in the field of museum education.


The ADKX Fellowship in Museum Education aims to diversify the museum field and reduce barriers among recent college graduates and current graduate students from historically underrepresented groups from acquiring full-time professional jobs. We value diversity in culture, race and ethnicity, and gender expression. Emerging museum professionals (less than three years of paid experience in the field), currently enrolled graduate students, or recent graduates (2020 to 2022) are eligible to apply. Applicants must identify as BIPOC or a similarly marginalized community. The museum especially welcomes applicants from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.


• Develop hands-on experience with museum education in an AAM-accredited institution
• Build familiarity with the museum’s collections and stories and with the Adirondacks unique role in American history and conservation as well as with the people who have lived in the region over time.
• Assisting with, team teaching, and eventually leading school outreach and virtual programming
• Research and development of program offerings, including bringing a different perspective and voice into existing programs
• Participate in mentoring sessions with outside consultant
• Conference attendance and other opportunities for professional development may be made available to Fellows, as schedules and funding permits.

Stipend: $10,800 plus free on-site housing.
Academic Credit: If requested, the museum will aim to meet any learning requirements and minimum hours for graduate students requiring course credit as part of the fellowship.
