Tom Bonamici

AUGUST

Bonamici means “Good Friend” in Italian. Tom was raised in Eugene, Oregon. He studied urban geography and architecture at Dartmouth College and industrial design at the Pratt Institute. He’s worked in bag and clothing design for 15 years, with extensive experience in entrepreneurship, small business, and domestic manufacturing. After 8 years of teaching at the University of Oregon, he’s thrilled to transition to a research role, exploring lightweight materials for backcountry travel. He’s particularly interested in showing the advantages of light weighting gear for human performance and environmental responsibility, as well as exploring the historical and poetic attributes of outdoor equipment.

“The location of this residency in the Adirondacks is crucial to my interest. A local of the Northwest, I’ve always tailored ultralight equipment to my own bioregion. But I’ve been a longtime student of outdoor equipment, and George Sears/Nessmuk is the patron saint of lightweight backcountry travelers. His chosen region for recreation was, of course, the Adirondack Mountains. I’m genuinely eager to research Sear’s gear and practices in his “home forest,” and to see how the challenges and opportunities in designing equipment for the Adirondack region will grow and push my practice. I imagine adapting classic Nessmuk designs with modern materials as one possibility for this residency, but am so excited to learn from the Museum’s staff and collections before I begin cutting fabric.”
