Can\u2019t wait for the event of a lifetime\u2014the April 8 total solar eclipse? We can\u2019t either! Join us in the weeks preceding the eclipse for an astronomy-themed Zoom series. And even with our focus on the skies, we can\u2019t forget about our appetites. The series will conclude with an annual favorite, the Paul Smith\u2019s College Culinary and Hospitality Program cooking demo\u2014this year featuring space-themed delectables!<\/p>\n

Programs are Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom.\u00a0Each requires a separate registration. Once you register, you will receive a confirmation with the link to the program.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On April 8, an eclipse of the Sun will be visible from the Adirondacks. Join astronomer Dr. Michael West as we explore the mysteries of eclipses and how these breathtaking events have shaped human history, culture, and our understanding of the universe. Whether you\u2019re a seasoned stargazer or just curious, you\u2019ll get tips on watching eclipses safely, learn what they reveal about the Sun, and discover why there will be no more eclipses someday.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>

Michael West se incorpor\u00f3 al equipo cient\u00edfico del Observatorio Lowell en 2015. Antes de unirse a Lowell, fue Director del Observatorio Maria Mitchell, Jefe de Ciencia del Observatorio Europeo Austral, Jefe de Operaciones Cient\u00edficas en Gemini Sur y Profesor de Astronom\u00eda en la Universidad de Haw\u00e1i. Ha sido investigador principal de seis proyectos del telescopio espacial Hubble hasta la fecha, y coinvestigador en muchos otros.<\/p>\n

El Dr. West tambi\u00e9n participa activamente en la educaci\u00f3n astron\u00f3mica y la divulgaci\u00f3n p\u00fablica. Es becario Fulbright de EE.UU. en 2021-2023 y pasar\u00e1 varios meses en Finlandia para ense\u00f1ar e investigar la comunicaci\u00f3n de la ciencia con el p\u00fablico. Ha formado parte de la Comisi\u00f3n de Comunicaci\u00f3n de la Astronom\u00eda con el P\u00fablico de la Uni\u00f3n Astron\u00f3mica Internacional. Imaging the Eclipse<\/h3>

This presentation will focus on what to expect from the total solar eclipse coming up on April 8th and how to plan for it. We\u2019ll talk about the phases of a total solar eclipse and the tools and resources you can use to make sure you don\u2019t miss any of it. We\u2019ll cover how to safely view or photograph the sun before, during, and after totality using a range of equipment like solar glasses, binoculars, and sun funnels. And we\u2019ll discuss interesting visual phenomena unique to solar eclipses that you can photograph even more easily and safely than the sun itself.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>

Steve Dittmar is a software engineer at IBM in Poughkeepsie by day and, for the last decade, an amateur astrophotographer by night. He\u2019s an instructor for the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory\u2019s yearly astrophotography workshop\u00a0and is actively involved year-round with public outreach star parties and topical presentations in the Mid-Hudson Valley area. He enjoys sharing the view through his telescopes and his photography and is recharged every time he hears \u201cOh wow!\u201d He imaged the 2017 total solar eclipse and will be attempting to image the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th<\/sup>\u00a0as well.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>
