The 6-million-acre Adirondack Park is the largest publicly protected area in the United States mainland. Thousands of people come each year to rest, relax, and rejuvenate surrounded by the natural beauty of mountains, forests, lakes, and streams.\u00a0 Yet this \u201cwilderness,\u201d this protected place loved by so many, bears the marks of nearly 200 years of use and abuse.<\/p>\n

The impact of human activity in the Adirondack Park is often easiest to grasp when seen from above. Scarring of the landscape from mining, paper mills, agriculture, recreation, and climate change are not always apparent from the ground, often hidden from road view and scenic trails. Photographer J. Henry Fair\u2019s monumental aerial photographic prints document changes in the landscape, from the towering piles of tailings (a byproduct of iron mining) on Lyon Mountain to the acreage of trees cut to allow the creation of an Olympic bobsled run. Resembling colorful abstract paintings, these images sometimes require a closer look to fully realize that beauty hides a less attractive story.<\/p>\n

Although the Park has been relatively protected from the worst impacts from industrialization, the Adirondacks have nonetheless been affected by our consumerist culture from inside and outside the Blue Line. The long-term effects our unsustainable use of our natural resources world-wide is becoming less abstract as we face unprecedented weather events, unhealthy water supplies, and vanishing species\u2014but there is hope. Places like the Adirondack Park offer a model for learning to live sustainably in ways that allow the planet\u2014our home\u2014to heal.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>

ABOUT THE ARTIST <\/strong><\/h5>\n

Henry Fair is an American photographer and environmental activist. Known for his \u201cchillingly beautiful\u201d (Audubon Magazine) <\/em>environmental aerial photos, Fair has called attention to the environmental challenges in different regions of the world for many years, often connecting those concerns with other social and political issues. His work has won him numerous recognitions. In 2020, he was featured as one of the 12 most influential nature and conservation photographers of our time in the newly released book Human Nature<\/em>, which received wide critical acclaim. In 2019, he won the distinction of \u201cEnvironmental Photography of the Year\u201d, and in 2012, he received the \u201cEarth Through A Lens\u201d Award. Fair has also published three photography books, including the critically acclaimed Industrial Scars<\/em>, which was reviewed by the New York Times<\/em>. He holds an undergraduate degree in Journalism from Fordham University. He is currently based between New York City and Berlin.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>
