SUMMARY:Newcomb AIC with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:We’ll walk a couple of miles along beautiful trails and among fine old trees\, including eastern hemlocks\, red spruce\, northern white-cedar\, sugar maples\, and yellow birch. The beautiful woods here will give us a chance to work on tree identification and give us a chance to look for forest birds and amphibians. Rich Lake and associated streams will offer further beauty and interest. The Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center is run by SUNY-ESF and hosts a variety of excellent programs year-round. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Walk on Minnow Pond Trail with Susan Hopkins
DESCRIPTION:This easy to moderate 3/4 mile trail is located right on ADKX property. Meander down to the ADKX boathouse\, located on Minnow Pond\, while taking in the scenery and learning more about the fungi growing in the Adirondacks. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nSusan Hopkins has learned to identify fungi through her 40-year membership in the New Jersey Mycological Association. She focuses on identification with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi (fungi with spines under their cap). Susan is also a “dyer\,” having learned the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. She lives in the Adirondack Park and continues to study the local fungi and offer lectures\, walks\, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.

SUMMARY:Sawyer Mountain with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:Sawyer Mountain rises just south of the village of Blue Mountain Lake. The views are good but not spectacular\, but the forest is lovely and shady\, and the trail is just right for an outing on a humid August day. We’ll look for summer wildflowers\, newly fledged songbirds\, and early fall migrants. SUMMARY:Hidden Cove with Mary Glynn
DESCRIPTION:We will hike close to two miles (about 4 miles round trip) to the Hidden Cove Lean-to on the shore of Long Lake to take in the views. The trail here covers rolling terrain\, some wet sections\, and navigating across a rocky stream crossing.  Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to responsibly enjoy these wild places. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register.  \nMary Glynn is the Public Programs Assistant Manager at ADKX. Prior to joining ADKX\, she served as the Education Programs Manager at the Adirondack Mountain Club. She has also worked as a Field Director and Wilderness Therapy Field Guide for the True North Wilderness Program in Vermont. Mary holds certifications in Mental Health Wilderness First Aid\, is a Wilderness First Responder\, a New York State Licensed Guide\, a Leave No Trace Level 3 Instructor\, and a Certified Interpretive Guide.
