SUMMARY:Huntington Forest with Allison Brusa
DESCRIPTION:Beginning at the Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center\, this program explores the complexity and ecological significance of mature and old-growth forests. We will then continue to the base of Goodnow Mountain to examine climate-adaptive forest management in action\, including research areas designed to support the migration of species better suited to future conditions. \nThis walk is in two parts. All participants will meet at the Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center for Part 1\, and those wishing to join Part 2 at Goodnow Mountain after will drive to the trailhead. \nPlease note that Part 2 will require participants hike about 500ft at a steep incline\, and walk another 50ft off trail. \nAllison Brusa is a forester with SUNY ESF in the Adirondacks. Education is central to her work\, and she is passionate about making forest science accessible and experiential. Drawing on a background in ecology and research\, she helps connect ecological processes and active management decisions\, inviting people to see the forest through the lenses of both a naturalist and a forester.

A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscapes and archaeological sites\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHe has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and more\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. His passion for biodiversity has also led to the co-discovery of six new scorpion species. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences. Dr. Stewart is a frequent media contributor and continues tree-ring research in the Adirondacks\, often hiking with his family.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll walk a couple of miles along beautiful trails and among fine old trees\, including eastern hemlocks\, red spruce\, northern white-cedar\, sugar maples\, and yellow birch. The beautiful woods here will give us a chance to work on tree identification and give us a chance to look for forest birds and amphibians. Rich Lake and associated streams will offer further beauty and interest. The Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center is run by SUNY-ESF and hosts a variety of excellent programs year-round. \n  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

DESCRIPTION:This easy to moderate 3/4 mile trail is located right on ADKX property. Meander down to the ADKX boathouse\, located on Minnow Pond\, while taking in the scenery and learning more about the fungi growing in the Adirondacks. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nSusan Hopkins has learned to identify fungi through her 40-year membership in the New Jersey Mycological Association. She focuses on identification with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi (fungi with spines under their cap). Susan is also a “dyer\,” having learned the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. She lives in the Adirondack Park and continues to study the local fungi and offer lectures\, walks\, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll walk a couple of miles along beautiful trails and among fine old trees\, including eastern hemlocks\, red spruce\, northern white-cedar\, sugar maples\, and yellow birch. The beautiful woods here will give us a chance to work on tree identification and give us a chance to look for forest birds and amphibians. Rich Lake and associated streams will offer further beauty and interest. The Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center is run by SUNY-ESF and hosts a variety of excellent programs year-round. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nDr. Alexander Stewart is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Lawrence University\, specializing in glacial geology and tree-ring science. A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscape observations\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHis love for geology and the outdoors was rekindled by his wife\, Krystyna\, whose passion for nature has taken them across thousands of miles of trails worldwide. Their shared enthusiasm fuels outreach efforts in the Adirondacks and sparks creative ways to present Earth science to the public and his students. Dr. Stewart has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and beyond\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences and continues his tree-ring work in the Adirondacks—often hiking with Krystyna and their family.

SUMMARY:Coney Mountain with Mary Glynn
DESCRIPTION:Coney Mountain rises between the villages of Tupper Lake and Long Lake on the border between Franklin and Hamilton Counties. The trail is a 1.1 walk to the summit and passes through beautiful woods\, including a stand of old-growth sugar maples. The 360 degree view from the open\, rocky summit is stunning. Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to best protect this Park. Elevation gain is a little more than 523 feet. Mary holds certifications in Mental Health Wilderness First Aid\, is a Wilderness First Responder\, a New York State Licensed Guide\, a Leave No Trace Level 3 Instructor\, and a Certified Interpretive Guide.

DESCRIPTION:Ferd’s Bog Trail begins along Uncas Road between the villages of Raquette Lake and Eagle Bay. The trail is short (0.7 mile one-way) but rich in interest.
