SUMMARY:History and Legends of the Northern Adirondacks. Volume 1.
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nEver since he began hiking the mountains of the Adirondacks\, John Sasso has been intrigued with the artifacts he would stumble upon\, such as iron bolts from old land surveys\, remnants of long-gone logging camps\, mysterious woods roads\, and stone foundations. The questions those finds provoked: ‘What was here?’ ‘What was their purpose?’ and ‘Where did the name come from?’ led him to research and write about the often-surprising and always entertaining answers he’s found over the years. The first volume in a planned series\, this book shows the fascinating stories behind the mountains of the Northern Adirondacks and\, it is hoped\, will lead to a deeper appreciation of this unique and remarkable area. \nAbout The Speaker:\n \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nOn June 6\, 2015\, two worst-of-the-worst murderers escaped from the Clinton Correctional Institute; the subsequent manhunt was the largest in New York State History. The escapees\, David Sweat and Richard Matt\, coursed a twenty-minute labyrinth of corridors and tunnels until they emerged into freedom on the outside. Now they were killers on the loose\, deadly and desperate. The story that unfolded was one of adventure and brutality and became the subject of a popular book and a Showtime limited series. This program will feature author Michael Benson with special guest Ivy Gocker\, former Adirondack Experience Library Director who was also an extra in the Showtime production. \nAbout The Speaker:

SUMMARY:Mapping the Adirondacks: Colvin\, Blake\, and the First True Survey of the Great Adirondack Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program. \nNew York State’s famous Adirondack landscape is immense\, spanning over six million acres of public forests\, lakes\, rivers\, mountains\, and private lands. In full color featuring hundreds of detailed maps and photos\, Mapping the Adirondacks celebrates it all with the first clear account of the original surveyor who explored and fully comprehended it—Verplanck Colvin. “Everywhere below\,” Colvin wrote\, “were lakes and mountains so different from all maps\, yet so immovably true.” His monumental accomplishment helped motivate the citizens of New York in 1894 to legally protect it for generations to come. \nAuthor Thatcher Hogan has carefully gleaned narratives and illustrations from Colvin’s notoriously dense annual reports and reassembled them with additional historic photographs to chronicle a compelling\, true story of rugged exploration. After a novice’s explanation of Colvin and Blake’s surveying terms\, the book follows their progress with one hundred of Hogan’s new maps and summit views. The Adirondack landscape remains formidable and fascinating—many of the views are those that Colvin first discovered. Along the way\, Hogan uncovers a story of intense ambition\, physical hardships\, and a weatherproof friendship. \nAbout The Speaker:\n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:River of Mountains
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program. \nLourie completed his trip. It took him three weeks and marked the first time anyone has traveled from the source of the Hudson to the mouth in a single vessel. The Hudson proved to be a very changeable river. It includes seven locks and nine power dams. The northern half is a true river with strong current\, but the lower half is tidal\, a sunken river from the days of glaciers. In its first 165 miles\, it drops more than 4\,000 feet to Albany. The second half falls no more than a foot. \nLourie’s account of his trip is a fresh look at one of America’s great and complex waterways\, one of the few\, in fact\, that still contains its historical and biological species of fish. It is also the longest inland estuary in the world. Henry Hudson called it the “great river of the mountains.” Nowadays\, too often the Hudson is stereotyped as a ruined\, polluted industrial river. Its glorious past is compared to its present neglect. \nIn River of Mountains\, Peter Lourie combines the Hudson’s rich history and descriptions of some of the region’s most impressive landscape with the residents of its mill towns\, the loggers\, commercial fishermen\, and barge pilots-all of whom are proof that the river is still a thriving\, vital waterway. So\, come with Peter Lourie on his trip\, come explore with him from a canoe one of this country’s great rivers\, join him in his wonderful adventure. \nAbout The Speaker:\n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Adirondack Campfire Stories
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program. \nThe Adirondack Park is filled with a lore unlike anywhere else in the world. Maybe it’s the beauty that surrounds the Park thanks to the thousands of mountains\, lakes\, and rivers within. Maybe it’s the history of woodsmen struggling to survive in a place that’s been aptly nicknamed\, “dismal wilderness.” Hard to say\, really. But everyone who visits this rugged\, beautiful mountain country will agree; there is a mystery about the Adirondacks.   \nIn this collection of spooky and supernatural stories set in the Adirondacks – and perfect to tell around a roaring campfire – author James Appleton taps into the lore of the Park from its well-trodden towns and trails to hidden places off the beaten path. Adapted from Appleton’s popular podcast\, Adirondack Campfire Stories features spooky stories\, both fiction and non-fiction\, that take place in the mountains\, on the trails\, and at the lakes of real places here in the Park. Tapping into the folklore of this majestic region\, Adirondack Campfire Stories will give readers haunting experiences under the stars for years to come.  \nAbout The Speaker:\n \n  \n  \n
