SUMMARY:Sketching the Adirondacks\, by Edward Pitts
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Program \nIn the summer of 1851\, long before the central Adirondacks became a vacation destination\, two young landscape painters crossed the region all the way from Lowville to Crown Point looking for wilderness scenes to sketch. Jervis McEntee and his friend Joseph Tubby would go on to become respected landscape painters. Guided by Asa Puffer\, a local woodsman\, they walked and paddled over 200 miles not including side trips. As they travelled\, they met every working Adirondack guide of those times as well as many early settlers\, hermits and a surprising number of other travelers. \nThis epic sketching trip has received little notice until now. Fortunately\, the artists both kept journals\, and McEntee’s handwritten journal has been preserved in the collection of the research library of the Adirondack Experience. The story of the sketching trip is based on McEntee’s journal as well as a host of other obscure original sources including Tubby’s journal\, newspaper articles\, letters and a formerly anonymous magazine article. \nBased on this research\, and using the tools of literary non-fiction\, Pitts has fashioned a series of thirty letters that the artists could have written. These letters allow the reader to become deeply familiar with the artists and their experience of the pristine Adirondack wilderness. Every letter is followed by an author’s note that explains the factual basis for the claims in the letters. The book also contains illustrations by McEntee and original maps tracing the route. \nAbout the Author:\nEdward Pitts is a retired attorney and former Social Security Administrative Law Judge who lives in Syracuse\, NY. He now spends his time researching\, writing and lecturing about Adirondack history. Syracuse University Press has published two of his Adirondack history books: Beaver River Country: an Adirondack History (2022) and Sketching the Adirondacks; Letters from the Wilderness (2025). His articles on Adirondack history have appeared in Adirondack Life\, Adirondac\, LOCALadk\, and online on Adirondack Almanack and the New York Almanack. He also maintains a blog of short illustrated articles titled Annals of the Beaver River. He is a member of the Rap-Shaw Club on Stillwater Reservoir in the west-central Adirondacks where he was president of the board of directors from 2011 until 2016. Before becoming a lawyer\, he taught philosophy courses at St. Bonaventure University and at the Pennsylvania State University.

DESCRIPTION:Join the ADKX for a hands-on cyanotype workshop with artist Andrea Mancuso (2026 ADKX Artist-in-Residence) on Minnow Pond Trail\, an easy-to-moderate ¾-mile trail located right on ADKX property. Along the trail\, participants will gather leaves\, rocks\, and other natural materials to arrange into an original design. At the Boathouse\, Andrea will guide the group through the cyanotype process\, a sun-powered photographic technique that turns fabric a deep Prussian blue\, as each design is exposed onto a tote bag. Participants will then walk back along the trail with their own one-of-a-kind tote made from sunlight and whatever they find on the trail itself. \nNo artistic or photographic experience is necessary for this workshop. All materials provided\, and the program is suitable for adults and families. \nCapacity is limited and pre-registration is required.

Meander down to the ADKX boathouse\, located on Minnow Pond\, while taking in the scenery and learning more about the geology of the Adirondacks. \n  \nDr. Alexander Stewart is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Lawrence University\, specializing in glacial geology and tree-ring science. A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscapes and archaeological sites\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHe has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and more\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. His passion for biodiversity has also led to the co-discovery of six new scorpion species. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences. Dr. Stewart is a frequent media contributor and continues tree-ring research in the Adirondacks\, often hiking with his family.

DESCRIPTION:Sold Out – Join us for a special guided tour with Penny Harr\, Exhibit Assistant at the Adirondack Experience and author of the forthcoming biography Anne LaBastille: A Biography of the Woodswoman. \nAs part of our continued celebration of the 50th anniversary of Woodswoman\, these tours offer a deeper look into the life and work of Anne LaBastille. \nPenny will lead visitors through selections from the museum’s library and archival collections before heading to Life in the Adirondacks\, our main exhibit exploring the Adirondack Park and its people\, to visit Anne LaBastille’s cabin. Drawing on her extensive research and personal insight\, Penny brings to life Anne LaBastille’s work as a writer\, wildlife ecologist\, and conservationist\, as well as the independence and vision that defined her time in the Adirondacks. \nAfterwards\, at 3 PM\, Penny will be at ADKX store where you can purchase a signed copy of her forthcoming biography. \nThere is no cost to attend the tour\, but museum admission is required (free for ADKX members). SUMMARY:Coney Mountain with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:Coney Mountain rises between the villages of Tupper Lake and Long Lake on the border between Franklin and Hamilton Counties. The trail is a 1.1 walk to the summit and passes through beautiful woods\, including a stand of old-growth sugar maples. The 360 degree view from the open\, rocky summit is stunning. Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to best protect this Park. Elevation gain is a little more than 523 feet. Altitude at the summit is 2267 feet. \n  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

She lives in the Adirondack Park and continues to study the local fungi and offer lectures\, walks\, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.

DESCRIPTION:This easy to moderate 3/4 mile trail is located right on ADKX property. Meander down to the ADKX boathouse\, located on Minnow Pond\, while taking in the scenery and learning more about the geology of the Adirondacks. \n  \nDr. Alexander Stewart is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Lawrence University\, specializing in glacial geology and tree-ring science. A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscapes and archaeological sites\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHe has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and more\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. His passion for biodiversity has also led to the co-discovery of six new scorpion species. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences. Dr. Stewart is a frequent media contributor and continues tree-ring research in the Adirondacks\, often hiking with his family.

SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making with Barbara Green
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT – Join Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop.\nAdditional date added by popular demand! \nParticipants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. The top of the basket is finished with a riveted handle before applying the rim. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. \nThe basket and wooden components are to be stained at home. When dried\, the harness\, skids and base are applied. Barbara will show how to do this at the workshop. Stain instructions are included in the handout. \n\n→All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day.\n→Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 8 hours.)\n→Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nSpots are limited\, and this workshop often sells out. Early registration is recommended. \n  \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband.
