SUMMARY:Sunset Moth Pinning and Preservation
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will go over the process for harvesting and drying specimens\, and rehydrating dried specimens. Students will have the opportunity to practice handling techniques\, spreading\, mounting\, the nuances of posing\, display\, and maintenance. Students go home with their own prepared sunset moth\, a specimen to practice on at home\, a spreading board that can be used for future projects\, a shadowbox display case for the finished piece\, and the knowledge to create their own pieces in the future. \nAs always\, all specimens are legally and sustainably sourced. \nAbout the Artist:  \nDivya Anantharaman is an award winning licensed professional preserving animals with honor and compassion. Her specialties are birds\, small mammals\, and anatomic anomalies. Her work seeks to combine the demonstrative aspect of scientific presentation with the symbolic\, introspective nature of art\, using taxidermy to engage diverse audiences with connection and enchantment with nature. She is passionately curious about the untapped potential of this scientific art\, and sharing it with others. Her classes seek to demystify the taxidermy process\, and make the field more accessible and engaging. You can learn more at https://www.gothamtaxidermy.com/

SUMMARY:ADKX Summer Concert Series: Root Shock
DESCRIPTION:Join us at ADKX on Wednesday\, August 14 from 6-8pm for our latest summer concert with Root Shock! \nSpearheaded by the powerhouse vocals of Jessica Brown\, the Root Shock sound is at once commanding and cathartic\, but never at the expense of a velvety\, carefully placed jazz or neo-soul lick. Phil Grajko’s smooth earthy vocals complement his guitar style inspired by Latin\, prog\, and psychedelic rock textures—often in tandem with mad keyboard genius Brian Lauri. Rounding out the band\, bassist Elliot Jarvis and drummer Tyre Outerbridge make for a formidable rhythm section fluent in patterns ranging from reggae to funk to reggaeton and maybe even metal. \nGrounds open at 5:30 \nThe concert is FREE and family-friendly. Registration is encouraged. \nThis event is rain or shine. Please bring your own chairs and/or blankets. Picnicking is permitted. Be ready to show ID at the gate.

SUMMARY:Packbasket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Packbasket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Packbasket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \nAll materials (except stain) and tools will be provided. \nParticipants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 7 hours.) \nComfortable shoes are recommended. \nRegistered participants must meet in the ADKX Visitor Center at 9:00. \nCancellation Policy: If the Adirondack Experience is required to cancel the event due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances\, customers will receive a full refund. There will be no refunds for no-shows. \n$180/member\, $210/non-member \nAbout the Artist: \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at The ArtHouse in Inlet NY from Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

SUMMARY:Wish Boat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you could wish for anything\, what would it be? Build your own tiny ship of twigs and nature bits to carry your wish out to the open sea… or pond. Start with a guided nature walk to gather your supplies\, and then meet up with Britt from ADK ArtRise to make your boat take shape! Great for the whole family! Hot glue will be our adhesive\, so boat builders under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Once your boat is complete\, we will write a wish\, light a candle\, and send it out on the pond! \nAll supplies provided. No experience required. \n$5 for ADKX Members; $7 for Non-Members (museum admission not included) \nAbout the Artist: \nBrittany Sternberg first fell in love with teaching crafts at Lake Clear Girl Scout Camp. She attended SUNY Brockport where she majored in B&W Photography and also delighted in Arts for Children and Gallery Management. Many of the magical things she crafts are for children: animal letter shadow boxes\, dollhouses and fantastic costumes. ADK ArtRise began taking shape just as Brittany made a pledge to herself to get MORE ART in her life again.  She wants to help you do the same!

A DSLR or mirrorless camera are highly recommended. \nProvide your own cameras\, batteries\, etc. \nWear appropriate hiking apparel. \n$50 for ADKX Members; $75 for Non-Members \nRain date: Tuesday\, July 30 \nAbout the Artist: \nJames Rodewald is a freelance nature photographer with decades of experience in many parts of the United States. His work primarily focuses upon the wild areas of the Northeast\, with New York’s Adirondack region being a frequent topic of study. He started his photographic journey back in the early 1980s with a Nikon FM-2 35-mm film camera and has evolved through various iterations of the Nikon line over the years to their more advanced digital SLRs of today. Although his portfolio of film and digital work spans many years\, one can see a few common themes emerge. One of those central themes is a long-term attempt to capture scenes of the natural world seemingly untouched by humanity\, nature in its natural state. No easy task in today’s world\, a principle which in part initiated the founding of Nature’s Sake Photography in 2017.

SUMMARY:John Collins Memorial Lecture: Wintering: The Nature of Resilience in Landscape
DESCRIPTION:The paintings in this body of work\, “Wintering\,” examine the metaphorical connection between nature\, my personal wintering\, and my experiences of the sublime. Through the materiality and language of paint\, light\, and subject matter\, grief is reconciled; hope and resilience prevail. Historical comparisons and research of artists who have painted Northern winter landscapes deepen my connection with my genre and role as an Adirondack landscape painter. The intention of this body of work is for the audience to find a personal connection to their own wintering through the lens of nature and with that connection\, find hope and resiliency of their own. \nThis program is free. \nAbout The Speaker: \nIngrid Van Slyke (b. 1967\, Washington D.C) received her M.F.A in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2023. She has exhibited her work in international and national group exhibitions throughout the country including New York\, Connecticut\, Maine\, Massachusetts\, and Illinois as well as solo shows. Her work has been juried into the highly prestigious Pastel Society of America “Enduring Brilliance” exhibitions held at the National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club in New York City. She has been a guest speaker for the National Association of Women Artists “Arts in Conversation” series. Ingrid teaches soft pastel painting to individuals and groups and has been a guest teacher at the New York State Art Teacher’s Summer Institute at The Great Camp Sagamore in Upstate NY. Her work is currently represented at Gallery 46 in Lake Placid\, NY. Ingrid lives with her family in Lake Placid\, NY\, and finds inspiration for her landscape paintings from the beautiful natural environment of the Adirondacks. \n** Before the program\, at 5:00 PM\, join us for our annual reception in memory of John “Johnny” Collins Jr.\, former Trustee and Executive Director of the museum.** \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Outsider: Stories of Growing Up Black in the Adirondacks by Alice Paden Green
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program. \n“Outsider: Stories of Growing Up Black in the Adirondacks” details Alice Paden Green’s experiences as her family grappled with poverty\, race and acceptance in the mid-20th century. This memoir\, prompted by a recent gathering of Blacks and whites in the Adirondacks for a discussion on race relations\, explores perceptions of Black families in the ’50s and ’60s and whether Blacks are still viewed as outsiders or welcomed with open arms in this four-season\, recreational playground dominated by white residents. \nThis book adds to the narrative on whether more work should be done to diversify the Adirondack region. \nAbout The Speaker:\n \n  \n  \n
