DESCRIPTION:You’ve no doubt heard about the fabulous new ADKX Boathouse on Minnow Pond\, but have you ever wondered what’s outside the normal boating boundaries? This is your chance to find out! Take a short (3/4 mile) morning hike to the lake with Shane Holmes\, licensed Adirondack guide\, and Doreen Alessi-Holmes\, ADKX Conservator. Learn about the history of the trail and about some of the flora and fauna that can be seen on the hike. Then\, prepare for an extended outing on the water in our historic vessels.* Paddle and row across the pond with Shane and Doreen and learn what lives beneath the surface. Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nSusan Hopkins has learned to identify fungi through her 40-year membership in the New Jersey Mycological Association. She focuses on identification with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi (fungi with spines under their cap). Susan is also a “dyer\,” having learned the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. She lives in the Adirondack Park and continues to study the local fungi and offer lectures\, walks\, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.

DESCRIPTION:An introductory basket making class for new and experienced basket makers. All attendees will be provided a hands-on demonstration for preparing black ash materials and a cultural background on basket making. All participants will be provided with splints\, forms\, and handles to complete a black ash berry basket by the end of the class. \n\n–All materials and tools will be provided.\n–Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is SOLD OUT. \nJoin Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \n\n–All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n–Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at SPACE Old Forge and L Post Rustics in Lake Placid. DESCRIPTION:The ADKX continues to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Northville-Placid Trail with our temporary exhibition\, Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid Trail and through a members-only hike. \nJoin ADKX Conservator Doreen Alessi-Holmes as well as Shane Holmes and Matthew Waligora (NYS Licensed Guides) for a 2+ mile round trip hike on a portion of Section 8 of the NPT. We’ll arrive at the secluded and quiet Catlin Bay on Long Lake. Directions will be provided upon registration to the trail head located just east of the town center. Doreen will share interesting facts about the history of the trail and about the behind-the-scenes work entailed in creating the Trail Makers exhibition. Afterwards\, celebrate the rewarding hike by enjoying an ice cream with your guides and fellow members.

Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nDr. Alexander Stewart is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Lawrence University\, specializing in glacial geology and tree-ring science. A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscape observations\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHis love for geology and the outdoors was rekindled by his wife\, Krystyna\, whose passion for nature has taken them across thousands of miles of trails worldwide. Their shared enthusiasm fuels outreach efforts in the Adirondacks and sparks creative ways to present Earth science to the public and his students. Dr. Stewart has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and beyond\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences and continues his tree-ring work in the Adirondacks—often hiking with Krystyna and their family.

SUMMARY:Coney Mountain with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:Coney Mountain rises between the villages of Tupper Lake and Long Lake on the border between Franklin and Hamilton Counties. The trail is a 1.1 walk to the summit and passes through beautiful woods\, including a stand of old-growth sugar maples. The 360 degree view from the open\, rocky summit is stunning. Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to best protect this Park. Elevation gain is a little more than 523 feet. SUMMARY:Hidden Cove with Mary Glynn
DESCRIPTION:We will hike close to two miles (about 4 miles round trip) to the Hidden Cove Lean-to on the shore of Long Lake to take in the views. The trail here covers rolling terrain\, some wet sections\, and navigating across a rocky stream crossing.  Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to responsibly enjoy these wild places. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register.  \nMary Glynn is the Public Programs Assistant Manager at ADKX. Prior to joining ADKX\, she served as the Education Programs Manager at the Adirondack Mountain Club. She has also worked as a Field Director and Wilderness Therapy Field Guide for the True North Wilderness Program in Vermont. Mary holds certifications in Mental Health Wilderness First Aid\, is a Wilderness First Responder\, a New York State Licensed Guide\, a Leave No Trace Level 3 Instructor\, and a Certified Interpretive Guide.

But that’s just what award-winning photographer Russ Hartung does in his photographs of the majestic peaks and intimate views of the Adirondack wilderness. Adirondack Solitude explores the feeling of being on top of a mountain before sunrise and watching the light change over landscapes of unbroken wilderness; the serenity of drifting across a misty lake in a kayak and hearing a loon’s echoing call in the distance; the chorus of enveloping rain from a sudden thunderstorm while on the trail\, and the answering symphony of peepers along the shore heard from the warmth of a tent in the evening. And it’s the vicarious feeling Hartung shares when he sees someone paddling slowly across a shrouded lake in the fog or a lone figure staring off towards the horizon from atop a rocky outcrop at the end of a hard climb. Whether it’s a wide-open view at the top of a High Peak or the miniature world brimming over in a hidden rock pool\, both the towering and the tiny inspire this sort of awe-inspiring connectedness. \nAbout The Speaker:\nRuss Hartung is a physician and photographer based in the Adirondack Mountain region of New York State. His passion for photography began in childhood with his first Kodak Brownie camera\, and has grown steadily over the years. In recent years\, he has pursued photography more seriously\, participating in numerous contests and juried exhibitions. His work primarily focuses on nature and landscape photography\, capturing the beauty and serenity of the Adirondacks and beyond. He has also enjoyed exploring sports photography\, especially while documenting his daughter’s track career at the Division I collegiate level and in professional competition. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nThe Nature of the Place is storied Adirondack nature writer Edward Kanze’s invitation to slow down\, smell the roses\, and get to know fellow creatures with more longstanding claims to this landscape than we have. Theirs is the real internet\, a web of life that weaves together an almost infinite number of threads into a fabric that’s a wonder to behold and something close to a miracle in a largely hostile universe. \nIn these dazzling pages\, readers meet the big charismatic animals of the Adirondacks\, the black bear and the moose. We encounter little creatures\, too\, all of which lead fascinating lives while nearly unseen: tiny fish that live in exquisite mountain streams; the infuriating and almost invisible biting insects called no-see-ums; centipedes; millipedes; and earthworms.
