SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is SOLD OUT. \nJoin Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \n\n–All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n–Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 7 hours.)\n–Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nRegistered participants must meet in the ADKX Visitor Center at 8:45. \nCancellation Policy: If the Adirondack Experience is required to cancel the workshop due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances\, customers will receive a full refund. There will be no refunds for no-shows. \n  \nAbout Workshop Leader: \n“I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at SPACE Old Forge and L Post Rustics in Lake Placid. My website is adirondackgreenhousebasketry.com” – Barbara Green

SUMMARY:Adirondack Solitude: Peace and Stillness in the Adirondack Wilderness\, by Russ Hartung
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nSolitude is hard to find these days\, and harder still to capture in an image. But that’s just what award-winning photographer Russ Hartung does in his photographs of the majestic peaks and intimate views of the Adirondack wilderness. Adirondack Solitude explores the feeling of being on top of a mountain before sunrise and watching the light change over landscapes of unbroken wilderness; the serenity of drifting across a misty lake in a kayak and hearing a loon’s echoing call in the distance; the chorus of enveloping rain from a sudden thunderstorm while on the trail\, and the answering symphony of peepers along the shore heard from the warmth of a tent in the evening. And it’s the vicarious feeling Hartung shares when he sees someone paddling slowly across a shrouded lake in the fog or a lone figure staring off towards the horizon from atop a rocky outcrop at the end of a hard climb. Whether it’s a wide-open view at the top of a High Peak or the miniature world brimming over in a hidden rock pool\, both the towering and the tiny inspire this sort of awe-inspiring connectedness. \nAbout The Speaker:\nRuss Hartung is a physician and photographer based in the Adirondack Mountain region of New York State. His passion for photography began in childhood with his first Kodak Brownie camera\, and has grown steadily over the years. In recent years\, he has pursued photography more seriously\, participating in numerous contests and juried exhibitions. His work primarily focuses on nature and landscape photography\, capturing the beauty and serenity of the Adirondacks and beyond. He has also enjoyed exploring sports photography\, especially while documenting his daughter’s track career at the Division I collegiate level and in professional competition. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Nature of the Place: On the Flora and Fauna of the Adirondacks\, by Edward Kanze
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nThe Nature of the Place is storied Adirondack nature writer Edward Kanze’s invitation to slow down\, smell the roses\, and get to know fellow creatures with more longstanding claims to this landscape than we have. Theirs is the real internet\, a web of life that weaves together an almost infinite number of threads into a fabric that’s a wonder to behold and something close to a miracle in a largely hostile universe. \nIn these dazzling pages\, readers meet the big charismatic animals of the Adirondacks\, the black bear and the moose. We encounter little creatures\, too\, all of which lead fascinating lives while nearly unseen: tiny fish that live in exquisite mountain streams; the infuriating and almost invisible biting insects called no-see-ums; centipedes; millipedes; and earthworms. Discover an orchid that pays a steep price for its rough treatment of bumblebees; plants so desperate for nitrogen they’ve taken to catching animals and eating them; poison-ivy and the reasons why we might want to exchange our dislike of it for love; and a common wildflower that goes through serial sex changes. Loons\, owls\, falcons\, eagles\, and songbirds pour out effusions of apparent ecstasy here\, along with much about bobcats\, foxes\, snowshoe hares\, beavers\, and flying squirrels. Snakes\, frogs\, salamanders\, and big predatory fish make appearances also\, as well as fungi that produce light in the dark\, and bacteria that manipulate the atmosphere to their own advantage\, even causing rain and snow to fall. \nThe Nature of the Place is Kanze’s love letter to his home\, the Adirondacks. Gathering materials from his decades-long column at the Adirondack Explorer and elsewhere\, extensively revised and rewritten for this book\, Kanze’s singular meditations on the flora and fauna of his home resonate far beyond his own beautiful\, beloved\, biologically vibrant neck of the woods. \nAbout The Speaker:\nEdward Kanze is an author\, naturalist\, guide\, and photographer from the Adirondack Mountains. He wrote regular columns for Adirondack Explorer and Bird Watcher’s Digest\, and his work has also appeared in Adirondack Life\, Audubon\, The Conservationist\, and many others. Kanze has been called the Adirondack “guide nonpareil” by Forbes Life magazine and was named Birder of the Year in 2017 by Bird Watcher’s Digest Magazine. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Greetings from the Great Camps: The History of the Adirondack Vacation
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nIn 1850 the Adirondack region remained\, literally\, a blank spot on the map—unsurveyed\, uncharted\, and largely unorganized. Most white Americans saw the Adirondacks as a place so desolate that—to quote an early document\, “by reason of Mountains\, Swampes (sic)\, and Drowned Lands is impassible and uninhabited.” \nYet by 1900 the Adirondacks hosted elaborate summer estates for the wealthiest families in America—including Vanderbilts\, Rockefellers\, Carnegies\, Whitneys\, and Morgans. Theodore Roosevelt actually inherited the Presidency while on a midnight buckboard ride through the heart of the park. For more than a century since\, the Adirondacks have remained a famous destination drawing magnates\, celebrities\, and everyday Americans. Hikers\, hunters\, canoe campers\, power oaters\, elites\, and environmentalists (and many combinations thereof) who all look forward to their visits and vacations in “the ADK.” \nHow did this transition occur? Why did it occur? What forces led to the development of the region during the late 19th Century\, and how does Adirondack history interact with American history more broadly? And just what was a “Great Camp\,” anyway? \nJoin American Historian and Year-Round Adirondacker Connor Williams for “Greetings from the Great Camps: The History of the Adirondack Vacation.” Williams\, who serves as Lead Historian at Great Camp Sagamore and teaches at Middlebury College\, will discuss the forces\, movements\, moments and people that led to the nexus of wilderness\, exertion\, rejuvenation\, and comfort that still all define the Adirondack region today. \n  \nThe recording of this program will be available to registered attendees only. If you are unable to join the live program or would like to watch it again\, instructions for accessing the recording will be provided on Thursday. \n  \nConnor Williams is a scholar\, teacher\, and advocate of American and African American history\, Connor Williams shares the stories of our past to help shape the societies of our future. A native New Yorker and aspiring maritime mountaineer\, Connor currently lives with his family along Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Park. He serves as the Historian for Great Camp Sagamore\, a National Historic Landmark and former Vanderbilt estate\, where he directs all history programming for several thousand visitors each summer. \nMost broadly\, and via a variety of formats\, Connor uses this role to conceive and execute innovative ways to teach environmental history\, Gilded Age history\, and the history of class\, capitalism\, and inequality to diverse public history audiences.   Prior to his Ph.D at Yale\, Connor earned a M.A. at Dartmouth College\, where his thesis examined diasporic influences upon Frederick Douglass’ political thinking. Among other fellowships\, awards\, and prizes\, he was the finalist for the nationwide Louis Pelzer Memorial Award for the best Graduate Student writing. Connor has taught at Yale\, Southern Connecticut State University and the Yale College Writing Center. He has also worked for Yale’s Manuscripts and Archives division and the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery\, Resistance\, and Abolition. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bad Juliet\, by Giles Blunt
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nAt a tuberculosis sanitarium in the Adirondacks\, a young tutor falls in love with a mysterious woman who survived the Lusitania disaster. \nRecently jilted by his fiancé\, Paul Gascoyne takes a job as a tutor to the patients at the Trudeau Sanitarium in upstate New York. There\, in the icebound beauty of the Adirondack Mountains\, he finds himself drawn to Sarah Ballard\, a beautiful but enigmatic young woman\, traumatized by her past aboard the ill-fated ship Lusitania. To rouse her out of her gloom\, Paul encourages her to write a memoir. \nAs Paul reads her words\, it gradually becomes clear that Sarah’s memories are a tangle of truth and fiction that he can’t begin to unravel. And yet he cannot overcome his attraction to her. When a terrible relapse leaves Sarah worried that she has little time left\, she begs Paul to be the one person in the world who will truly know her. \nAbout The Speaker:\nGiles Blunt grew up in North Bay\, Ontario\, before studying English Literature at the University of Toronto. The author of twelve novels\, including the award-winning John Cardinal Mystery series\, Blunt has more recently turned to literary fiction with Bad Juliet. He lives in Toronto. \n  \n  \n
