If Sam makes it out of the woods\, she might just know what to do next! \nAbout The Speaker:\nJen Denny is a conservationist\, NYS Guide\, and Adirondack 46er. She grew up in West Seneca\, NY and was initially drawn to the Adirondack Mountains for school. Jen graduated from Paul Smith’s College in 2015 and went on to get a Master’s in Environmental Studies and Sustainability from Unity College in 2023. She currently manages the Stewardship Program at the Adirondack Watershed Institute. Since 2014\, Jen has been involved with the High Peaks Summit Steward Program as an employee and then volunteer. SUMMARY:Georgia O’Keeffe at Lake George: Painted Subjects\, Social Relations\, and Reflections on Selfhood
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nHow might we account for the creative outpouring that marked Georgia O’Keeffe’s years at Lake George\, an interval that stands among the most prolific of her seven-decade career? A survey of her work from this period reveals an astonishing abundance: roughly two hundred paintings on canvas and paper\, accompanied by numerous sketches and pastels. \nLake George functioned for O’Keeffe as a potent site of artistic stimulus. Many of the botanical subjects that would come to define her oeuvre first took shape in this site. As a retreat from New York City\, it afforded not only sustained contact with the natural world but a deep sense of place\, an anchoring essential to her developing modernist vision. Yet it was not solely a refuge; Lake George also operated as a social nexus\, animated by a continuous circulation of visitors. \nWithin this multifaceted setting\, O’Keeffe pursued new subjects while reckoning more deliberately with thoughts of selfhood and artistic independence\, including the imagined prospect of a studio of her own. This presentation examines the forces that shaped her Lake George years: her evolving subjects\, the shifting social dynamics around her\, and the ways in which the site itself nourished her creative practice. \n  \nYaritza Martinez Pule joined the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in 2022 as Curatorial Assistant after completing a Fulbright research grant. Previously\, she was a curatorial research fellow at Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City and a curatorial assistant at 80WSE Gallery\, a gallery affiliated with New York University where she co-curated and organized exhibitions with the Institute of Fine Arts\, the Costume Institute\, and Steinhardt’s Department of Art. In addition\, she was a visiting scholar in the archives at Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. She holds an MA from New York University where she concentrated her research on the historical and cultural dimensions of textiles\, and a BA from Marquette University with a focus on Art History\, Digital Media Studies\, and Spanish and Latin American Studies\, completing a part of her art history education from King’s College London. Most recently\, Yaritza curated A Circle that Nothing Can Break\, an exhibition examining the ways in which Georgia O’Keeffe’s unique vocabulary of round forms intersected with feeling\, memory\, and lived experience. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual program.  \nTeddy Roosevelt biographer Paul Grondahl will discuss the dramatic hours when Roosevelt climbed Mount Marcy\, learned that President William McKinley had died of an assassin’s wounds\, a daring midnight wagon ride to the North Creek train station\, and his swearing-in as the 26th President of the United States in Buffalo on September 14\, 1901. Grondahl’s talk will clarify one lingering mystery about Roosevelt’s long delay at the Tahawus Club before he set out for North Creek. \n  \nPaul Grondahl is the Opalka Endowed Director of the New York State Writers Institute at the University at Albany\, one of the nation’s pre-eminent literary presenting organizations. He is an award-winning journalist who worked as a reporter for 33 years at the Albany Times Union\, where he still contributes a weekly column. He was named director of the Writers Institute in 2017 and is also a distinguished alumnus in arts and letters at UAlbany\, where he earned a master’s degree in English. He is the author of several books\, including political biographies of Albany Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd and Theodore Roosevelt\, titled I Rose Like a Rocket: The Political Education of Theodore Roosevelt. His forthcoming biography\, Andy Rooney: A Lucky Life\, will be published by SUNY Press in the fall of 2026. \n  \n  \n

In conversation with NCPR’s Mitch Teich\, Young will discuss his book Heading Out: A History of American Camping. Young’s book reflects on how places like the Adirondacks helped shape camping as a cherished seasonal ritual. From the rush of Murray’s fools in the late 19th Century\, to the trails carved out by determined backpackers\, to the modern campsites dotted across the Park\, Young explores the enduring appeal of “roughing it” and what it reveals about Americans’ longing for simplicity\, freedom\, and a temporary step away from everyday life. \nAbout The Speaker:\nTerence Young is a historical geographer with a long-standing interest in how Americans have experienced nature\, earned through years of study and time spent thinking deeply about landscapes\, travel\, and recreation. He earned his Ph.D. in geography at UCLA and later taught at California State Polytechnic University\, Pomona\, where his work explored parks\, tourism\, and the meanings people attach to outdoor places. His books include Building San Francisco’s Parks\, 1850–1930 and Heading Out: A History of American Camping\, which traces the roots of camping from early parklands and mountain regions to a national tradition shaped by movement\, modern life\, and the search for renewal. SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making with Barbara Green
DESCRIPTION:Join Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop.\nParticipants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. The top of the basket is finished with a riveted handle before applying the rim. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. \nThe basket and wooden components are to be stained at home. When dried\, the harness\, skids and base are applied. Barbara will show how to do this at the workshop. Stain instructions are included in the handout. \n\n→All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day.\n→Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 8 hours.)\n→Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nSpots are limited\, and this workshop often sells out. Early registration is recommended. \n  \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband.

DESCRIPTION:Carol Marie Vossler\, an artist and papermaker\, will lead you through making a triangle lantern out of handmade paper and stencils.\nYou’ll be cutting and folding as part of the process. Using stencils\, you can cut shapes with either an Xacto knife or a pin tool\, each offering unique effects\, before assembling your lantern. The session also offers a brief look at the historical and contemporary importance of lanterns. \nAll materials (except light) and tools will be provided. \n\n→Participants are welcome to bring drinks and snacks for the day.\n→Museum admission is not included but can be added to the workshop fee at a reduced rate.\n→Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nWorkshop is for participants 12 years old and older. Participants 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Save by registering for two! \nCarol will also be demonstrating and selling her works at ADKX July 10-12. \n  \nCarol Marie Vossler works across disciplines\, crafting both two- and three-dimensional pieces from handmade paper\, ceramics\, and found materials. Her work incorporates imagery and objects to bring attention to environmental concerns and inspire proactive responses. Her experience as a forester taught her to observe both the large-scale and subtle details of forests and to act in ways that support their well-being. This ongoing relationship between the living forest and her artistic creativity has shaped her practice for many years. Carol’s art offers a unique perspective\, encouraging curiosity and thoughtful questions.

DESCRIPTION:Working with artist Neile Cooper\, create a stained glass assemblage. Using found and natural materials\, along with stained glass\, participants will create a unique artwork\, celebrating the nature of the Adirondacks.\nStudents are encouraged to bring meaningful materials; together we will plan a composition and design the stained glass elements. SUMMARY:Working All the Angles Photography Workshop with Carl Heilman II
DESCRIPTION:Join Adirondack photographer\, Carl Heilman II\, for a daylong photography workshop that will help inspire you to explore a range of shooting options to expand your photographic creativity.\nThe day will begin with a morning classroom discussion where we’ll cover camera setup options plus details and questions about the basic photography principles—exposure\, motion\, depth of field. Carl will also discuss photo composition and equipment and lens options to help folks more easily explore various shooting angles when on location. \nDuring the afternoon we will experiment with the covered techniques along with different ways of looking at subjects while going to various exhibits around the museum grounds. We’ll also walk the trail to scenic Minnow Pond as long as the weather cooperates. \nParticipants should bring along a camera\, tripod\, a variety of lenses and focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto\, close-up (macro) equipment they might have\, and perhaps a solid ND filter. There are no specific requirements\, but a larger range of equipment choices will offer a greater variety of creative shooting options. (For example\, in his standard camera bag\, Carl carries 2 DSLR mirrorless camera bodies\, a 14-24\, 24-120\, 70-300 zooms\, a 16mm fisheye lens for unique shooting angles\, extension tubes for close-up options\, and a variable solid ND filter.) \n\n→Workshop open to all abilities.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food and snacks for the day. Lunches may also be purchased at the Lake View Café.\n→Museum admission is included in the workshop fee.\n→All participants should bring their own drinks and/or water bottles for the day.\n→Sturdy walking shoes for the trails are strongly recommended.\n\nCarl Heilman is an internationally published photographer and author who has been photographing the Adirondacks since 1975. DESCRIPTION:Join Ali Haas of Wildly Pressed to learn about methods for flower pressing\, organizing\, and designing unique artwork with pressed botanicals.\nParticipants will be able to use pressed flowers and other botanicals from Ali’s collection and create their own design.  \nAll materials and tools will be provided. \n\n→Participants are welcome to bring drinks and snacks for the day.\n→Museum admission is NOT included but can be added to the workshop fee at a reduced rate.\n→Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n→Workshop is for participants 13 years old and older.
