Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. SUMMARY:Wish Boat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:If you could wish for anything\, what would it be? Build your own tiny ship of twigs and nature bits to carry your wish out to the open sea… or pond. Start with a guided nature walk to gather your supplies\, and then meet up with Britt from ADK ArtRise to make your boat take shape! Great for the whole family! Hot glue will be our adhesive\, so boat builders under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Once your boat is complete\, we will write a wish\, light a candle\, and send it out on the pond! \nAll supplies provided. No experience required. \n$5 for ADKX Members; $7 for Non-Members (museum admission not included) \nAbout the Artist: \nBrittany Sternberg first fell in love with teaching crafts at Lake Clear Girl Scout Camp. She attended SUNY Brockport where she majored in B&W Photography and also delighted in Arts for Children and Gallery Management. Many of the magical things she crafts are for children: animal letter shadow boxes\, dollhouses and fantastic costumes. ADK ArtRise began taking shape just as Brittany made a pledge to herself to get MORE ART in her life again.  She wants to help you do the same!

SUMMARY:Packbasket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Packbasket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Packbasket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \nAll materials (except stain) and tools will be provided. \nParticipants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 7 hours.) \nComfortable shoes are recommended. \nRegistered participants must meet in the ADKX Visitor Center at 9:00. \nCancellation Policy: If the Adirondack Experience is required to cancel the event due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances\, customers will receive a full refund. There will be no refunds for no-shows. \n$180/member\, $210/non-member \nAbout the Artist: \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at The ArtHouse in Inlet NY from Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

She focuses on identification with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi (fungi with spines under their cap). Susan is also a “dyer\,” having learned the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. The presentation will focus on the artistic influences and environmental changes that affected her artwork. \nThis program is free. \nAbout The Speaker: \nSara Pearsall\, a contemporary artist from Queensbury and Johnsburg\, NY\, finds inspiration in the Adirondack Mountains\, reflected in her artwork spanning photography\, jewelry and felted mixed media landscapes. Graduating from The College of Saint Rose\, she embarked on a graphic design career\, later moving to teaching positions in art while exploring photography\, jewelry making\, small-scale metal work\, and felting. Today\, Sara balances her artistry with family life and hikes along quiet trails. Her pieces\, exhibited at regional institutions such as The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls\, NY and The View in Old Forge\, NY\, capture the essence of the Adirondacks through vibrant compositions\, rich textures and innovative techniques in felt\, polymer clay\, and mixed media. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:A look back at 30 years along the Northville- Placid Trail through the eyes of Long Laker Matt Burnett. From his childhood in Long Lake to adventures as a DEC Assistant Forest Ranger patrolling along the Cold River\, the NPT serves as the backdrop for his work as an Adirondack Artist\, Environmental Steward\, and outdoor enthusiast. Stories and pictures touching on the history\, evolution\, and generations living and experiencing life along Long Lake and the Cold River\, from early college years to recent youth trips with the Northern Forest Explorers. \nAbout the Speaker:  \nMatt Burnett earned his Master of Fine Arts from the Maine College of Art and his Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Plattsburgh. His paintings\, installations\, and other programming are a direct product of his rural Northern New York upbringing. He infuses nature and conservation into all of his creative pursuits\, which has earned him international acclaim. In addition to his 20-year professorship at SUNY Canton\, Matt is a Fellow at the Munich University of Applied Sciences in Bavaria. He is best-known locally for immersive experiences in and about the Adirondacks\, including years of guided youth paddle trips along the Raquette River Corridor and through the Western High Peaks. Matt lives in Saranac Lake with his wife\, Amy.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will go over the process for harvesting and drying specimens\, and rehydrating dried specimens. Students will have the opportunity to practice handling techniques\, spreading\, mounting\, the nuances of posing\, display\, and maintenance. In this presentation\, a selection of colorful\, abstract rugs will be discussed and their stories revealed. \nThis program is free. \nAbout The Speaker: \nLiz Alpert Fay learned the technique of traditional rug hooking in 1998. Since then\, the artist’s studio practice has evolved to include innovative contemporary hand hooked rugs and large- scale hooked art installations. DESCRIPTION:Artist Patrice Jarvis-Weber will guide you through creating your own Adirondack-themed painting inspired by spending time in nature and recreation. Paint with Patrice classes are geared for beginners\, but open to all ages and artistic abilities. Participants will use acrylic paints on an 8×8 or 8×10-inch stretched canvas and take home a finished painting. All supplies are included in fee. \nAbout the Artist:  \nPatrice Jarvis-Weber has worked in and for local art and educational facilities for over 20 years. She has organized and led workshops for adults and children in art centers\, libraries\, senior centers\, and schools including Saratoga Arts\, SUNY Adirondack\, BOCES\, Double H Ranch\, and World Awareness Children’s Museum. SUMMARY:Nature Walks with Ed Kanze: Ferd’s Bog
DESCRIPTION:August 29: Ferd’s Bog \nFerd’s Bog Trail begins along Uncas Road between the villages of Raquette Lake and Eagle Bay. The trail is short (0.7 mile one-way) but rich in interest. Ferd’s is best known for its boreal birds\, including the Canada jay and boreal chickadee\, and its wildflowers. An unhurried\, easy ramble will give us a chance to savor the fauna and flora. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks.
