SUMMARY:Adirondack Pack Basket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is SOLD OUT. \nJoin Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Pack Basket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Pack Basket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \n\n–All materials (except stain) and tools will be provided.\n–Participants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 7 hours.)\n–Comfortable shoes are recommended.\n\nRegistered participants must meet in the ADKX Visitor Center at 8:45. \nCancellation Policy: If the Adirondack Experience is required to cancel the workshop due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances\, customers will receive a full refund. There will be no refunds for no-shows. \n  \nAbout Workshop Leader: \n“I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. All necessary tools and materials are always included in my workshops. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at SPACE Old Forge and L Post Rustics in Lake Placid. SUMMARY:NPT/O'Neil Flow with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the Centennial of the Northville-Placid Trail\, ADKX is collaborating with Naturalist and Adirondack Guide\, Ed Kanze\, for this special hike along the historic trail. This section of the trail will bring us up and over a ridge and into a wild valley on the far side. Our destination and turn-around will be a stream and marsh draining from the O’Neil Flow\, just to the East. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register.  \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

SUMMARY:MEMBER EVENT: Catlin Bay Member Hike
DESCRIPTION:The ADKX continues to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Northville-Placid Trail with our temporary exhibition\, Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid Trail and through a members-only hike. \nJoin ADKX Conservator Doreen Alessi-Holmes as well as Shane Holmes and Matthew Waligora (NYS Licensed Guides) for a 2+ mile round trip hike on a portion of Section 8 of the NPT. We’ll arrive at the secluded and quiet Catlin Bay on Long Lake. Directions will be provided upon registration to the trail head located just east of the town center. Doreen will share interesting facts about the history of the trail and about the behind-the-scenes work entailed in creating the Trail Makers exhibition. Afterwards\, celebrate the rewarding hike by enjoying an ice cream with your guides and fellow members.

Directions and more information will be sent once you register. \nDr. Alexander Stewart is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Lawrence University\, specializing in glacial geology and tree-ring science. A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscape observations\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHis love for geology and the outdoors was rekindled by his wife\, Krystyna\, whose passion for nature has taken them across thousands of miles of trails worldwide. Their shared enthusiasm fuels outreach efforts in the Adirondacks and sparks creative ways to present Earth science to the public and his students. Dr. Stewart has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and beyond\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences and continues his tree-ring work in the Adirondacks—often hiking with Krystyna and their family.

SUMMARY:Coney Mountain with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:Coney Mountain rises between the villages of Tupper Lake and Long Lake on the border between Franklin and Hamilton Counties. The trail is a 1.1 walk to the summit and passes through beautiful woods\, including a stand of old-growth sugar maples. The 360 degree view from the open\, rocky summit is stunning. Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to best protect this Park. Elevation gain is a little more than 523 feet. DESCRIPTION:We will hike close to two miles (about 4 miles round trip) to the Hidden Cove Lean-to on the shore of Long Lake to take in the views. The trail here covers rolling terrain\, some wet sections\, and navigating across a rocky stream crossing.  Along the way\, we will discuss what makes the Adirondacks unique\, and how to responsibly enjoy these wild places. \nMeet at the trailhead at 1:30 pm.  \nWhat to Bring: Proper footwear for a hike like sneakers or boots\, appropriate clothing\, water and snacks if desired. \nRegistration required for this hike. Directions and more information will be sent once you register.  \nMary Glynn is the Public Programs Assistant Manager at ADKX. Prior to joining ADKX\, she served as the Education Programs Manager at the Adirondack Mountain Club. She has also worked as a Field Director and Wilderness Therapy Field Guide for the True North Wilderness Program in Vermont. Mary holds certifications in Mental Health Wilderness First Aid\, is a Wilderness First Responder\, a New York State Licensed Guide\, a Leave No Trace Level 3 Instructor\, and a Certified Interpretive Guide.
