SUMMARY:Working All the Angles Photography Workshop with Carl Heilman II
DESCRIPTION:Join Adirondack photographer\, Carl Heilman II\, for a daylong photography workshop that will help inspire you to explore a range of shooting options to expand your photographic creativity.\nThe day will begin with a morning classroom discussion where we’ll cover camera setup options plus details and questions about the basic photography principles—exposure\, motion\, depth of field. Carl will also discuss photo composition and equipment and lens options to help folks more easily explore various shooting angles when on location. \nDuring the afternoon we will experiment with the covered techniques along with different ways of looking at subjects while going to various exhibits around the museum grounds. We’ll also walk the trail to scenic Minnow Pond as long as the weather cooperates. \nParticipants should bring along a camera\, tripod\, a variety of lenses and focal lengths from wide angle to telephoto\, close-up (macro) equipment they might have\, and perhaps a solid ND filter. There are no specific requirements\, but a larger range of equipment choices will offer a greater variety of creative shooting options. (For example\, in his standard camera bag\, Carl carries 2 DSLR mirrorless camera bodies\, a 14-24\, 24-120\, 70-300 zooms\, a 16mm fisheye lens for unique shooting angles\, extension tubes for close-up options\, and a variable solid ND filter.) \n\n→Workshop open to all abilities.\n→Participants are welcome to bring food and snacks for the day. Lunches may also be purchased at the Lake View Café.\n→Museum admission is included in the workshop fee.\n→All participants should bring their own drinks and/or water bottles for the day.\n→Sturdy walking shoes for the trails are strongly recommended.\n\nCarl Heilman is an internationally published photographer and author who has been photographing the Adirondacks since 1975. He started climbing the High Peaks on a pair of handcrafted snowshoes in the 1970s and continues to explore and photograph the mountains and lakes\, while pursuing his passion for portraying the unique beauty of the Adirondack Park –and sharing his decades of photography experience with others in his photography workshops and tours\, coffee table books\, and how-to photography books.

SUMMARY:Minnow Pond Trail with Alexander Stewart
DESCRIPTION:This easy to moderate 3/4 mile trail is located right on ADKX property. Meander down to the ADKX boathouse\, located on Minnow Pond\, while taking in the scenery and learning more about the geology of the Adirondacks. \nDr. Alexander Stewart is an Associate Professor of Geology at St. Lawrence University\, specializing in glacial geology and tree-ring science. A retired U.S. Army veteran\, his research explores environmental histories through landscapes and archaeological sites\, with numerous publications in glacial landforms\, hydrology\, and dendrochronology. \nHe has led field courses across Alaska\, Iceland\, East Africa\, and more\, inspiring students through hands-on exploration. His passion for biodiversity has also led to the co-discovery of six new scorpion species. As national president of Sigma Gamma Epsilon\, he helps shape the future of Earth sciences. Dr. Stewart is a frequent media contributor and continues tree-ring research in the Adirondacks\, often hiking with his family.

DESCRIPTION:You’ve no doubt heard about the fabulous ADKX Boathouse on Minnow Pond\, but have you ever wondered what’s outside the normal boating boundaries?\nThis is your chance to find out! Take a short (3/4 mile) morning hike to the lake with Shane Holmes\, licensed Adirondack guide\, and Doreen Alessi-Holmes\, ADKX Conservator. Learn about the history of the trail and about some of the flora and fauna that can be seen on the hike. Then\, prepare for an extended outing on the water in our historic vessels. Paddle and row across the pond with Shane and Doreen and learn what lives beneath the surface. After you return to the ADKX campus\, enjoy a special lunch under the shade of the Marion River Carry Pavilion.

SUMMARY:Huntington Forest with Allison Brusa
DESCRIPTION:Beginning at the Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center\, this program explores the complexity and ecological significance of mature and old-growth forests. We will then continue to the base of Goodnow Mountain to examine climate-adaptive forest management in action\, including research areas designed to support the migration of species better suited to future conditions. \nThis walk is in two parts. All participants will meet at the Newcomb Adirondack Interpretive Center for Part 1\, and those wishing to join Part 2 at Goodnow Mountain after will drive to the trailhead. \nPlease note that Part 2 will require participants hike about 500ft at a steep incline\, and walk another 50ft off trail. \nAllison Brusa is a forester with SUNY ESF in the Adirondacks. Education is central to her work\, and she is passionate about making forest science accessible and experiential. Drawing on a background in ecology and research\, she helps connect ecological processes and active management decisions\, inviting people to see the forest through the lenses of both a naturalist and a forester.

SUMMARY:Catlin Bay with Ed Kanze
DESCRIPTION:Catlin Bay is a 2.8 mile hike round trip along the Northville-Placid Trail at a scenic location along the northeast shore of Long Lake. \nEd Kanze is a naturalist\, author\, and Adirondack Guide with more than forty years’ experience leading walks in wild places. A former National Park Ranger\, he worked at Acadia National Park and Gulf Islands National Seashore\, served as Curator of the Trailside Nature Museum in Cross River\, New York\, taught field ecology for the National Audubon Society\, and was senior naturalist at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining\, New York. Ed has deep roots in the Adirondacks. His great-great-great-great grandparents Daniel and Hannah Brownell carved a farm out of the woods along the Sacandaga River\, ca. 1795. \nEd is the author of many books as well as a longtime nature newspaper columnist\, magazine columnist\, photographer\, lecturer\, and videographer. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Vermont\, Ed is well- traveled in his 6-million-acre Adirondack Mountain backyard and has led international trips to Australia\, New Zealand\, and Alaska.

DESCRIPTION:This easy to moderate 3/4 mile trail is located right on ADKX property. Meander down to the ADKX boathouse\, located on Minnow Pond\, while taking in the scenery and learning more about the fungi growing in the Adirondacks. \nSusan Hopkins has learned to identify fungi through her 40-year membership in the New Jersey Mycological Association. She focuses on identification with a special interest in all of the tooth fungi (fungi with spines under their cap). Susan is also a “dyer\,” having learned the use of various species of wild fungi to dye wool. She lives in the Adirondack Park and continues to study the local fungi and offer lectures\, walks\, and demonstrations on fungi and mushroom dyeing.
