Friday and Saturday, August 10-11
10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Discover the traditions, tools, skills, and lifestyle of nineteenth-century trappers, explorers, and traders known as the mountain men. During one of our most popular events, visitors can meet the American Mountain Men and explore life in the wilderness, view a traditional encampment, learn about traditional clothing in eastern and western styles, identify pelts, and watch live demonstrations of fire starting, cooking, knife and tomahawk throwing, and firearm and bow shooting.
American Mountain Men is an organization, with chapters around the U.S., of people dedicated to “the preservation of the traditions and ways of our nation’s greatest, most daring explorers and pioneers, the mountain men; to the actual conservation of our nation’s remaining natural wilderness and wildlife; and to the ability of our members to survive alone, under any circumstances, using only what nature has to offer.” The group was founded in 1968 and now researches the history of mountain men and members continuously work for mastery of primitive skills. The group prides itself on the accuracy and authenticity of its interpretation and shares the knowledge they have gained with all who are interested.
