SUMMARY:Starling Taxidermy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Students will learn everything they need to create their very own bird taxidermy mount\, from proper skinning\, degreasing/washing\, to sculpting\, mounting\, and finishing. \nOur subject will be the European Starling; with their eye-catching plumage—glossy\, spotted\, and iridescent—starlings enliven our surroundings. All birds are legally and sustainably sourced; no animals are harmed for the sake of taxidermy. \nPre-registration required \n$360 for ADKX Members; $395 for Non-Members \nAbout the Instructor:  \nDivya Anantharaman is an award-winning licensed professional preserving animals with honor and compassion. Her specialties are birds\, small mammals\, and anatomic anomalies. Her work seeks to combine the demonstrative aspect of scientific presentation with the symbolic\, introspective nature of art\, using taxidermy to engage diverse audiences with connection and enchantment with nature. She is passionately curious about the untapped potential of this scientific art\, and sharing it with others. Her classes seek to demystify the taxidermy process\, and make the field more accessible and engaging. You can learn more at https://www.gothamtaxidermy.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Creative Nature Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:** RESCHEDULED TO July 30 DUE TO WEATHER ** \nJoin Photographer James Rodewald to learn new techniques for transforming nature photography beyond the literal and into a more expressive and artistic vision of the natural world that surrounds us. In this workshop\, you will learn techniques such as intentional camera movement\, long exposure\, and multiple exposure as well as honing your compositional skills and learning how to use light across the day. Lens choices and their impact upon image making will also be explored. You will be amazed by what your camera can help you do! A DSLR or mirrorless camera are highly recommended. \nProvide your own cameras\, batteries\, etc. \nWear appropriate hiking apparel. \n$50 for ADKX Members; $75 for Non-Members \nRain date: Tuesday\, July 30 \nAbout the Artist: \nJames Rodewald is a freelance nature photographer with decades of experience in many parts of the United States. His work primarily focuses upon the wild areas of the Northeast\, with New York’s Adirondack region being a frequent topic of study. He started his photographic journey back in the early 1980s with a Nikon FM-2 35-mm film camera and has evolved through various iterations of the Nikon line over the years to their more advanced digital SLRs of today. Although his portfolio of film and digital work spans many years\, one can see a few common themes emerge. One of those central themes is a long-term attempt to capture scenes of the natural world seemingly untouched by humanity\, nature in its natural state. No easy task in today’s world\, a principle which in part initiated the founding of Nature’s Sake Photography in 2017.

SUMMARY:Packbasket Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Barbara Green of Adirondack Green House Basketry for an Adirondack Packbasket making workshop. Participants will weave a full-sized Packbasket\, approximately 18” tall. They will make their packs in the same manner as original packs were made using reed rather than black or brown ash. \nSolid wood skids and an interior wooden base hold the harness in place. There will be a selection of harness colors to choose from. The top of the basket will be finished with a sewn in handle before applying the rim. \nWhen dried\, the harness\, skids\, and base are applied. Students will be shown how to do this. After the workshop\, you can stain the basket and wooden components at home and will be given instructions with the class materials. \nAll materials (except stain) and tools will be provided. \nParticipants are welcome to bring food\, drinks\, and snacks for the day. Museum admission is included in the workshop fee. (Please note that basket completion takes about 7 hours.) \nComfortable shoes are recommended. \nRegistered participants must meet in the ADKX Visitor Center at 9:00. \nCancellation Policy: If the Adirondack Experience is required to cancel the event due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances\, customers will receive a full refund. There will be no refunds for no-shows. \n$180/member\, $210/non-member \nAbout the Artist: \nBarbara Green: I discovered basket weaving as a hobby in 2007. While never very crafty\, this called to me. I found something that brings me peace\, yet challenges me regularly. Weaving allows me to be creative while creating something that is functional. Having spent most of my life in the Adirondacks\, I find it important to know the history of the iconic Adirondack Pack Basket\, and I find great joy in teaching others how to make their own. My baskets are made with reed rather than black or brown ash like the original pack baskets. Reed is highly renewable and durable. I learned on very basic tools and teach the same way. My harnesses are made by me\, and the bases and skids are made from scrap lumber by my husband. I still travel to some craft fairs in the summer season\, and my work can be found at The ArtHouse in Inlet NY from Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

SUMMARY:ADKX Summer Concert Series: Root Shock
DESCRIPTION:Join us at ADKX on Wednesday\, August 14 from 6-8pm for our latest summer concert with Root Shock! \nSpearheaded by the powerhouse vocals of Jessica Brown\, the Root Shock sound is at once commanding and cathartic\, but never at the expense of a velvety\, carefully placed jazz or neo-soul lick. Phil Grajko’s smooth earthy vocals complement his guitar style inspired by Latin\, prog\, and psychedelic rock textures—often in tandem with mad keyboard genius Brian Lauri. Rounding out the band\, bassist Elliot Jarvis and drummer Tyre Outerbridge make for a formidable rhythm section fluent in patterns ranging from reggae to funk to reggaeton and maybe even metal. \nGrounds open at 5:30 \nThe concert is FREE and family-friendly. Registration is encouraged. \nThis event is rain or shine. Please bring your own chairs and/or blankets. Picnicking is permitted. Be ready to show ID at the gate.
