Pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer l'ach\u00e8vement du premier chemin de fer transcontinental de la nation en mai 1869, le financier de San Francisco David Hewes a fabriqu\u00e9 cinq anneaux en or \u00e0 partir d'une p\u00e9pite d'or qui avait \u00e9t\u00e9 attach\u00e9e au \"Golden Spike\", une pi\u00e8ce comm\u00e9morative utilis\u00e9e lors de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d'inauguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le \"Golden Spike\" ou \"The Last Spike\" symbolisait la fin de la construction du chemin de fer et le d\u00e9but du service ferroviaire d'une c\u00f4te \u00e0 l'autre des \u00c9tats-Unis. Aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s du pr\u00e9sident Ulysses S. Grant et du secr\u00e9taire d'\u00c9tat William H. Seward, le r\u00e9v\u00e9rend John Todd, qui a prononc\u00e9 l'invocation lors de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie d'inauguration du 10 mai 1869, a re\u00e7u ce symbole historique. Le Dr Todd \u00e9tait un ami du magnat des chemins de fer Thomas Durant (p\u00e8re du constructeur du Great Camp, William West Durant) et un amoureux des Adirondacks.
