ADKX Announces the 2026 Harold K. Hochschild Award Recipients Dick Beamish and the Adirondack Explorer Magazine

March 19, 2026

Blue Mountain Lake, NY The Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) will be celebrating their annual Benefit Gala & Harold K. Hochschild Award ceremony on Saturday, July 25 from 5 to 9 PM, under the stars at their museum in the heart of the Adirondacks. This yearly celebration and fundraiser highlights the organization’s service to the Adirondack community, as well as honors the Harold K. Hochschild Award recipient. This award, given annually to a different recipient, is dedicated to the memory of the museum’s founder, whose passion for the Adirondacks, its people, and environment inspired him to create the museum and establish the Adirondack Park Agency (APA). The 2026 award recipients are Dick Beamish and the Adirondack Explorer Magazine.

For more than five decades, Dick Beamish has been one of the Adirondack Park’s most persistent and passionate advocates. Born and raised in Albany, Beamish first fell in love with the region as a boy spending summers at Camp Dudley on Lake Champlain. After graduating from Williams College and earning a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia, he became the first communications director of the newly formed Adirondack Park Agency in 1972. In that role, he crisscrossed the state working to educate the public about the region and the urgent need for thoughtful planning and protection. His firsthand accounts of those pivotal early years are preserved in the ADKX archives as part of a major oral history collection recently donated by author Brad Edmondson.

By the 1990s, Beamish recognized a void in how news and information about the Adirondacks were shared. Misconceptions about the Park were common—both inside and outside the Blue Line—and he believed a regional publication could help bridge divides and elevate informed dialogue. In 1998, after years of determination and fundraising, Beamish launched Adirondack Explorer, a nonprofit news magazine dedicated to covering the Park’s natural and human communities. Its mission: “to inform and influence, to identify problems and solutions, to help shape public opinion and policy.”

“Dick Beamish’s vision and unwavering commitment have strengthened understanding of the Adirondacks for generations, and Adirondack Explorer continues that vital work every day. Their dedication to thoughtful dialogue, environmental stewardship, and community storytelling reflects the very ideals Harold Hochschild championed. We are honored to recognize Dick and the Explorer with this year’s award, and we look forward to celebrating their extraordinary impact at the 2026 Gala.” said ADKX Trustee Nancy Keet.

From its earliest issues, the Explorer has played an essential role in presenting balanced reporting on complex topics, celebrating outdoor recreation and natural history, and highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing Adirondack communities. Today it stands as one of the most trusted sources of independent journalism in the region.

“We are grateful for Dick Beamish and Adirondack Explorer’s decades of dedication to the Adirondack Park. Their commitment to thoughtful reporting and community engagement has made a lasting difference, and we’re delighted to honor them at this year’s Gala.” said ADKX Executive Director David Kahn

Adirondack Experience Board of Trustees Launches Search for New Executive Director Ahead of David M. Kahn’s Planned 2026 Retirement

August 19, 2025 | 12:15 PM

Blue Mountain Lake, NY With the end of a very full 2025 summer season approaching, the Adirondack Experience (ADKX) Board of Trustees is planning ahead by developing a smooth transition process for a new Executive Director. David M. Kahn, the current Executive Director, informed the board of his intention to retire in 2026. Knowing his plans in advance allows the Board to develop an orderly transition process and assures David’s capable leadership of the organization in the coming months. The Board of Trustees are in the very early planning stage of the search process and are confident that with David’s continued leadership throughout this transition period the institution will continue to thrive.

“Over his fourteen years of service, David has had a tremendous impact on the Adirondack Experience including spearheading new exhibitions, renovating existing buildings, hiring and developing capable staff, supporting the robust school outreach programs, filling packed events calendars, and reaching out to members and donors,” said Anne Donovan Bodnar, Adirondack Experience Board Chair. “We look forward to celebrating these and many more of David’s accomplishments over the next year.”

Kahn is the eighth Executive Director in ADKX’s history. Prior to joining ADKX, he held leadership roles at institutions including the Brooklyn Historical Society, Connecticut Historical Society, and Louisiana State Museum. ADIRONDACK EXPERIENCE TO OPEN FOR 2025 SEASON

Innovative Exhibits, Educational Programs and Interactive Fun for All

Blue Mountain Lake, NY Adirondack Experience (ADKX), the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, will open for the 2025 season on Friday, May 23. Leading this year’s lineup is the debut of Natural Beauty: The Art of Rustic Furniture, a major new exhibition that explores the history, artistry, and current trends of rustic furniture design.

Returning favorites also help define the 2025 season, including Artistes et inspiration dans la nature, now in its third year and featuring new additions that bring fresh perspectives to this evolving exhibit. This dynamic exhibition invites guests to explore the creative legacy of the Adirondacks through the lens of light, forests, water, and mountains with interactive features in the ADKX Art Lab.

“We’re always energized by the start of a new season,” said David Kahn, Executive Director at Adirondack Experience. “It’s a chance to welcome visitors with fresh programs, engaging exhibitions and new ways to experience the campus. This year, we’re especially excited to showcase the evolving world of Adirondack rustic—where tradition meets innovation in unexpected ways.”

This season also marks the return of ADKX’s standout events, from the ever-popular Adirondack Art Festival, Mushroom Mania and Rustic Fair to Xperience for All and FallFest.

Exhibit Highlights

  • Launching this summer, Natural Beauty: The Art of Rustic Furniture celebrates the beauty, creativity, and deep connection to nature expressed in handcrafted furniture and decorative arts. On view in ADKX’s new temporary exhibition gallery, the exhibit features over 100 rare works from around the world drawn from US museums and private collections alongside the museum’s own holdings, many never seen by the public. The exhibition explores the evolution of rustic furniture, from its 19th-century origins to contemporary interpretations that continue to shape the field today.
  • Returning for its third season, Artistes et inspiration dans la nature continues to immerse guests in the power of place. The exhibition will feature new acquisitions and rarely seen pieces from the museum’s art vaults, with a special emphasis on textile arts in 2025. Highlights include Tabletop Mountain, a large tapestry by pioneering artist Cynthia Schira; a dimensional felted landscape by New York artist Sara Pearsall; and Ripple: Lake Water, a hooked wool piece by Liz Alpert Fay inspired by the shimmering surface of Blue Mountain Lake. Additional new works by bead workers, sculptors, photographers, and painters expand the story of how the Adirondacks have shaped and sparked artistic vision. The exhibit’s interactive ADKX Art Lab, created in collaboration with artist Barney Bellinger, invites visitors to continue their creative journey hands-on.
  • 2024 marked the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Northville-Placid Trail, a 138-mile route that traverses the Adirondack Park from the town of Northville to Lake Placid. Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid Trail invites visitors to discover the trail’s origins, the team behind its creation, the communities along its path, and how it is used today. Featuring selections from the museum’s extensive collections of art, photography, guidebooks and maps, the exhibit also complements permanent displays focused on hiking and trail life. This special exhibition will remain on view through the end of the 2025 season.
  • ADKX encourages visitors to start their journey on campus with La vie dans les Adirondacks, a 19,000-square-foot immersive exhibition that introduces visitors to the Adirondack Park with videos, historical objects, and artifacts.
  • Bois et eaux invites visitors to learn the history of outdoor recreation in the Adirondacks. Historic and present-day photographs provide a lively view of Adirondack recreation with a focus on people in a natural setting.
  • Bateaux et navigation de plaisance, a celebration of more than 50 vintage watercraft and their role in regional life, returns this season with an enhanced entry experience at the Drew and Nancy Forhan Boat Building Plaza. New features — including welcoming seating, native landscaping, and a tranquil water feature — set the tone for an exhibit that honors the enduring connection between people and the region’s waterways.

New Workshops and Artist- in-Residence Programs

  • Our annual season of workshops includes a variety of options, including opportunities to create an Adirondack Pack Basket, craft natural bug repellents, or try outdoor photography.

  • The museum’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence Program will welcome four talented artists—Jacoub Reyes, Iakonikonriiosta, Tom Bonamici, and Réka Szabó—who will live and work on site for one month each from June through September. Selected through a competitive international application process, these artists will create original works across the museum’s campus and lead hands-on activities in the ADKX Art Lab. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe their creative process, chat with the artists, and explore how the museum’s collections and surroundings inspire contemporary artistic expression. In addition, shorter residencies will feature artists including illustrator Lydia Nicolas; plein-air painter Sandra Hildreth; Akwesasne sculptor and potter Natasha Smoke Santiago, and Akwesasne basket-maker Angello Johnson.

Outdoors Highlights

  • Starting July 1*, visitors can borrow a range of boats at the Hangar à bateaux ADKX, including a rotating collection of vintage canoes, traditional guideboats, and rowboats, to enjoy upon Minnow Pond, a roughly 90-acre body of water above Blue Mountain Lake.
  • Sentier de l'étang Minnow is an easy ¾-mile walk, suitable for the whole family to discover Minnow Pond, known as a “gem in the wilderness.”
  • Blue View Trail offers a short, vigorous route for more experienced hikers. From the higher vantage point, the views of Blue Mountain Lake are even more breathtaking. The Blue View Trail can be accessed as a spur off the Minnow Pond Trail.

*Boathouse & Trails open July 1st – weather, trail, and safety conditions permitting.

ADKX will be open daily from May 23 through October 13, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on exhibits, events, and visitor experiences, visit www.theadkx.org.

Adirondack Experience Receives Historic $2M in State Funding to Support Creation of Major New Exhibition The African American Experience in the Adirondacks Opening in 2027

Blue Mountain Lake, NY—The Adirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), has received $2M in funding from New York State in support of a new $3M permanent exhibition, the African American Experience in the Adirondacks. The new funding will be in addition to $750,000 ADKX has already raised. Opening on July 4, 2027, the exhibition will help celebrate the abolition of slavery in New York State.

Planning for the exhibition is already underway. Charles Clark III is serving as Project Curator and will be leading a public collecting initiative to identify documents, photographs, and artifacts in private hands that can help tell the story of the Adirondacks’ Black communities. A scholarly advisory committee of experts in African American history has been assembled and includes: Amy Godine (Independent Historian), Dr. Clarence Jefferson Hall (Queensborough Community College), Dr. Melissane Shrems (St. Lawrence University), Dr. Gretchen Sorin (SUNY Oneonta), and Dr. Connor Williams (Great Camp Sagamore). Together, they will shape the content of the 2,200-square-foot exhibition that will be the most comprehensive exploration of the stories of African Americans in the region that any museum in the North Country has ever undertaken. The exhibition will explore the lives of prominent African Americans who have called the North Country their home as well as everyday people: the miners, loggers, hospitality workers, and others who helped build the local economy. As is the case with all of ADKX’s exhibition, the African American Experience in the Adirondacks will include interactive features to engage 21st century audiences. Related school programming for regional schools will also be developed to complement the new exhibition.

“We are very grateful to have had the support of the state legislature – especially Senator Jeremy Cooney, Assemblymember Michaelle C. Solanges, and The New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus – for this important project,” said ADKX Executive Director David Kahn. “Creating this exhibition will help us realize our goal to tell the stories of all Adirondackers. We also anticipate that the exhibition will help draw African American heritage tourists to the region.”

The opening of this exhibition represents another major step forward in ADKX’s on-going initiative to reexamine and expand the narratives that have shaped common understandings of the Adirondacks and to shed new light on the experiences of diverse communities in the region. This initiative began in earnest with the opening of a major permanent exhibition on the Mohawk and Abenaki communities, Une nature sauvage et peuplée, in 2017.

The African American Experience in the Adirondacks is one of a number of major permanent exhibitions ADKX is planning to introduce in the future. Other projects will focus on Adirondack forests as well as the hotel and resort industry.

Adirondack Experience Announces New Research Fellowship Program Awards for the 2025-2026 Academic Year

Blue Mountain Lake, NY – Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), is pleased to announce its fellowship class for the 2025-2026 academic year. This research fellowship program enables emerging and established scholars to make use of the unparalleled collections found in the ADKX library. Funded by Julie and Warder Cadbury and Peter C. Welsh endowments, these fellowships aim to support scholarly exploration of Adirondack history.

Selected from a highly qualified pool of applicants, the researchers chosen as this year’s recipients represent a diverse range of academic backgrounds and interests:

  • Rachel Ameen, a graduate student in Geography at Syracuse University will be exploring cultural representations of three “animals” – black bears, common loons, and blackflies – within the context of recreation and tourism in the Adirondacks. Project title: Forever Wild: A Cultural History of Animals and Recreation in the Adirondacks.

  • Ella McPherson, Associate Professor of Sociology at University of Cambridge, will be conducting research on Adirondack hermits, examining the ways hermits and their publics have jointly shaped the meaning and significance of being a hermit. Project title: The Adirondack Hermit Imaginary.

  • Christopher Roy, an Independent scholar with a strong background in the history and culture of the Abenaki community, will compile a catalogue of Abenaki archives and artifacts in public repositories in the North Country. Project title: An Abenaki Catalogue.

“The research fellows contribute to the fundamental goal of sharing material in the library and archives with the public,” said Jenny Ambrose, Director of Archives & Special Collections at ADKX. “The Adirondack Experience’s impact in the communities it serves grows exponentially as fellows publish, integrate their research in teaching, and enhance our knowledge of the region.”

Applications were evaluated based on several criteria; the significance of the project to scholarship about the Adirondack region, the qualifications of the applicant to undertake the work, and the capacity of the ADKX collections to support the project.

The ADKX staff and trustees look forward to welcoming the fellows to the Adirondack Experience campus and the community in the coming academic year. Ambrose and other ADKX collections experts will work one-on-one with the scholars to assist with the research and discovery. Visiting scholars will also have the opportunity to consult other historical collections in our region as part of their research project.

“The Adirondack Experience has a long-standing commitment to encouraging inquiry into the region’s history through research and publication,” said Executive Director David Kahn. “We are very excited to be able to support the next generation of Adirondack researchers as they pursue answers to new questions being posed within the scholarly community.”

ADKX Announces the 2025 Harold K. Hochschild Award Recipients Adirondack Foundation and Cali Brooks

Blue Mountain Lake, NY The Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) will be celebrating their annual Benefit Gala & Harold K. Hochschild Award ceremony on Saturday, July 26 from 5 to 9 PM, under the stars at their museum in the heart of the Adirondacks. The 2025 award recipients are the Adirondack Foundation and CEO & President Cali Brooks.

Adirondack Foundation is composed of a group of compassionate problem-solvers working to enhance the lives of people in the Adirondacks through philanthropy. They work to connect generous donors with the causes they care about in the places they love. They are grantmakers – the largest private grantmaker in the region – and community connectors. As the only community foundation serving the entire Adirondack region, they proudly steward a family of funds pooled and invested together for maximum impact. Investing these funds collectively has allowed them to grant out millions of dollars alongside many generous supporters since they were founded in 1997.

From the beginning, CEO & President Cali Brooks has been the driving force behind the tremendous positive change the Foundation has generated in the Adirondack region. During her tenure the Foundation’s endowment has grown from $2M to $100M – supporting hundreds of regional nonprofits with over $80 million in grants and scholarships. The incredible philanthropic pipeline that Brooks has helped to create has become the lifeline for so many in the Adirondacks. Over the last quarter century Brooks has evolved into a major player in the Adirondack Park, gradually reshaping the Adirondack Foundation and its ability to impact not only small projects but larger projects as well.

“Cali Brooks has an unparalleled passion for the Adirondack Park and the wellbeing of all its citizens. I know Harold Hochschild would have been thrilled to see the impact the Foundation is having on the Adirondacks and its people. That is what he cared so deeply about,” says ADKX Honorary Trustee Frances Beinecke.

Some of their most impactful community initiatives include the Adirondack Birth to Three Alliance focused on providing kids with the best possible start so they can become healthy, thriving members of the community; and the Special and Urgent Needs Fund which provides responsive granting resources that can be deployed to assist Adirondack communities and nonprofits during times of crisis. The fund has helped communities, business, and individuals throughout the Adirondacks including over $2M in COVID-19 response and recovery funds.

“The ADKX would like to thank Cali Brooks and the Adirondack Foundation for their remarkable dedication towards making the Adirondack region a better place to live,” said Executive Director David Kahn. “We look forward to celebrating them at this year’s Gala.”

New Works & Artists Featured in Adirondack Experience’s Artists & Inspiration in the Wild

Museum and Exhibition Expanded for 2024 Season

Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y. – Several new and significant works of art are now on display in the Adirondack Experience’s (ADKX) Artistes et inspiration dans la nature exhibition, the most comprehensive showing of the museum’s art and decorative collections in its history. The permanent exhibit, which debuted in July 2023, showcases an inclusive and wide-reaching interpretation of Adirondack art across centuries – from renowned artists such as Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait and Winslow Homer to the groundbreaking work of Margaret Jacobs and for the first time, Tyler Schrader, who represents a new generation of Adirondack woodworkers.

Described as “refreshing” and “vibrant” by museum guests in 2023, Artists & Inspiration in the Wildfeatures more than 250 works acrossfour main galleries that illustrate how the natural features of the Adirondacks – light, forests, water, and mountains – have sparked the creative visions of diverse painters, sculptors, and expert artisans.

“Because there is so much diversity within creative arts across the Adirondacks, our goal is to introduce visitors to new acquisitions in the collection, feature new artists and their work, and to offer new experiences each year,” said Chief Curator Laura Rice. “These artists are making work with different materials, from different perspectives, yet they all share this deep sense of connection to the Adirondack landscape.”

Some of the artists with works on view include:

  • Margaret Jacobs – A member of the Akwesasne Mohawk community, Jacobs incorporates aspects of her Indigenous identity in her work. Carrying Knowledge: Mint represents her take on the iconic Adirondack packbasket that “is inspired by Haudenosaunee utility packbaskets but fully fabricated from steel.” In 2022, Art New England named Jacobs as one of 10 emerging New England artists, and her work has been cited in popular publications like Harper’s Bazaar.
  • Tyler Schrader – A woodworker who uses organic shapes, spirals, and curves that suggest natural tree forms, Schrader brings in a distinctive style that is equally at home in a rustic cabin or urban loft. His complex sculpture Cosmic Portal, which measures 9’ by 6’, incorporates layers of oak, maple, ash, and poplar that curve over lights that move in rhythm and change colors in response to music or the natural electrical impulses of plants.
  • John Van Alstine – Inspired by the Adirondack landscape, mountains, and the guideboat, Van Alstine works primarily in steel and stone. The works in the artist’s Pyxis Awry series feature a “vessel” form—historically understood in art as a symbol for the self, a group of people, or all humankind.

Artistes et inspiration dans la nature invites visitors to further engage with the exhibition through a variety of innovative interactives. These range from ceiling projections and audio sounds that tie to each gallery’s theme to the ability to physically adjust the lighting of a landscape painting to see how it impacts the mood of the piece.

ADIRONDACK EXPERIENCE TO OPEN FOR 2024 SEASON

New Exhibits, Programs and Interactive and Educational Activities for All Ages

Blue Mountain Lake, NY Adirondack Experience (ADKX) will open on May 24 for the 2024 season, inspiring visitors to learn and connect with all-things Adirondack, past and present. In addition to its expansive list of ongoing daily offerings, several new works of art – including, Cosmic Portal, a complex sculptural piece that measures 9’ by 6’ – will be on display in Artistes et inspiration dans la nature, which debuted in July 2023.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Northville-Placid Trail (NPT), a 138-mile route that transverses Adirondack Park. To honor this milestone, the museum will launch its newest special exhibition, Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid Trail and offer daily programming and opportunities to connect hikers, history buffs, and those who simply treasure the region to come together to mark this anniversary in a personal way.

“ADKX is thrilled to invite our visitors this season to imagine walking in the shoes of the team who built the Northville-Placid Trail 100 years ago,” said Director of InterpretationCheryl Braunstein. “For those who have since followed the trail, or those who aspire to, we hope to honor the deep connections with those who marked the way.”

ADKX will also introduce Tuesday Trail Talks & Tours, a new monthly series to learn about the people who hike, maintain, and work to preserve the Northville-Placid Trail today. In addition to new and refreshed exhibits, the museum’s most popular festivals, such as Celebrate Akwesasne, Adirondack Artisan Festival, Mushroom Mania, the Rustic Fair, Xperience for All, and FallFest will also return this year.

Exhibit Highlights

  • The largest permanent exhibition devoted to Adirondack art in the world, Artistes et inspiration dans la nature opened last year. Several new pieces by renowned and groundbreaking artists have been recently installed. The interactive exhibit features more than 250 works acrossfour main galleries that illustrate how the natural features of the Adirondacks – light, forests, water, and mountains – have sparked the creative visions of diverse painters, sculptors, and expert artisans. After exploring the main galleries, visitors end their journey in the ADKX Art Lab, a makerspace created in collaboration with Adirondack artist Barney Bellinger.
  • Visitors to Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid will learn about the history of the trail, the team who built it, particularly Edwin Noyes and Howard Rowe, the people along the trail’s path (French Louis, Noah John Rondeau, the Plumley family, among others) and the trail as it is used today. The exhibition features works from the museum’s art, photo, guidebook and map collections, and connects directly to objects on view permanently, especially stories about hiking and trails as well as the beloved Adirondack figure Rondeau. The exhibition will close at the end of the 2025 season.

New Workshops and Artist- in-Residence Programs

A full schedule of events and roster of participating artists will be available on the ADKX website in the coming weeks. Available online here: https://www.theadkx.org/events/workshops/

  • Our annual season of workshops includes a variety of options. ADKX has partnered with the Adirondack Center for Writing to offer a Cut-Up Poetry Collage Workshop, where text from discarded books, magazines, and newspapers is physically cut up and rearranged to create a poem. Other available workshops include a chance to try one’s hands at a traditional Adirondack craft, such as paddle-making (spend the day shaping a traditional beavertail canoe paddle), packbasket making, and more.
  • The Indigenous Artist-in-Residence program will welcome 11 Akwesasne Mohawk artists to demonstrate their artistry and unique craft. Artists will be located in the La vie dans les Adirondacks exhibition on select dates from June to September.
  • Inspired by the Adirondacks Artist-in-Residence program, nine regional artists will be near Artistes et inspiration dans la nature throughout July and August to demonstrate their artistic processes.

Outdoors Highlights

  • Visitors are able to borrow a range of boats at the Hangar à bateaux ADKX, including a rotating collection of vintage canoes, traditional guideboats, and rowboats, to enjoy upon Minnow Pond, a roughly 90-acre body of water above Blue Mountain Lake.

ADKX will be open every day, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., through October 14, 2024. For additional information and updates, visit www.theadkx.org.
