Adirondack Experience Offers Research Fellowships for the 2025-2026 Academic Yea

Press Room

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE, NY – November 20, 2024 – Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) invites applicants to submit proposals for three short-term research fellowships for the 2025-2026 academic year. Funded by Julie and Warder Cadbury and Peter C. Welsh endowments, the fellowships support scholarly exploration of the history and culture of the Adirondack region of New York State. The museum welcomes applications from researchers at all levels including graduate degree candidates as well as post-doctoral and independent scholars. Cadbury fellowships are open to scholars from any discipline who are researching projects in any area of study supported by the Adirondack Experience’s collections. The Welsh fellowship is awarded to projects focused on environmental history interpreted broadly.

The ADKX staff and trustees look forward to hosting the next class of fellows to the Adirondack Experience campus and the community in the second academic year of the new program. The 2024-2025 fellowship class is delving into the ADKX’s unparalleled collections to investigate a variety of topics from mushroom foraging to work culture in the forest industry to the history of birchbark canoes. “It is exciting to work with scholars conducting in-depth research in our archives,” notes Jenny Ambrose, Director of Archives & Special Collections. “I greatly enjoy helping researchers locate materials in our extensive holdings that will inform their projects.”

John Kuhn, Associate Professor at Binghamton University and Cadbury fellowship recipient, is working in the library this November. He describes his research on birchbark canoes: “At the Adirondack Experience, I’ve been working not just with their huge collection of primary and secondary materials relating to canoes and other small craft, but also their unparalleled collection of historic freshwater boats. This includes not just birchbark canoes themselves, but also types of settler watercraft derived from this indigenous technology, including the museum’s famous collection of gorgeous Adirondack guideboats and lesser-known novelties like full-scale commercially-sold paper boats, which enjoyed a brief fad in the late 19th century.”

Do you – or a student or a colleague or a friend – have a project you would like to explore in our archives? We welcome proposals for the next round of fellowships. Applications are evaluated by a committee of Adirondack scholars in conjunction with ADKX staff based on several criteria; the significance of the project to scholarship about the Adirondack region, the qualifications of the applicant to undertake the work, and the capacity of the ADKX collections to support the project.

To apply visit: https://www.theadkx.org/adkx-fellowships/. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2025. Stipends in the amount of $5000 accompany the fellowship award. Announcement of the awards will be made on March 1, 2025.
