Una obra maestra reproducida: el legado de Caleb Chase en la gala ADKX de 2026
When guests gather for the Adirondack Experience’s annual Benefit Gala on July 25, the centerpiece of the live auction will bridge more than a century of regional maritime history. This year’s featured live auction item is an exact replica of a historic Great Camp Santanoni guideboat, originally built by Caleb Chase, the legendary builder credited with producing the earliest known examples of the Adirondack guideboat over a prolific 60-year career.

While the original vessel remains preserved in the ADKX permanent collection, this seaworthy replica was meticulously handcrafted on-site by Boatbuilder-in-Residence Nate Atkinson. For over two decades, the museum’s working boat shop, located within the Embarcaciones y navegación exhibition, has hosted master builders to keep this technical craftsmanship alive for visitors.
True to northern New York traditions, Atkinson utilized native timber chosen for its strength and weight efficiency: traditional white pine planking, red spruce ribs and stems, a black cherry trim, and red maple oars. Following months of live demonstration on the museum campus, this project proudly returns Caleb Chase’s iconic design to the water for the first time since the turn of the twentieth century.

The live auction will serve as a premier highlight of the Gala, which also features the presentation of the Harold K. Hochschild Award to Dick Beamish and the Adirondack Explorer.
