Episode 31: All About Anne: Meet the Woodswoman

Have you heard of Anne LaBastille? She was an incredible Adirondack woman who was a certified Adirondack Guide, a scientist, the first woman commissioner of the Adirondack Park Agency (APA), and lived off grid in a cabin. This episode of ADK-Xtra Credit introduces Anne, and tells the story of how she built her home with the help of her friends. Anne’s cabin is now in our Life in The Adirondacks exhibit.

Anne picked the spot for her cabin very carefully, finding a place that would help her, without damaging the local environment. Work together as a class to find the best place to build an imaginary cabin either in your classroom or outside the school. You must find a spot where you don’t have to move anything, and you have access to the things you think you will need.

Questions

Higher grade level students may want to explore some topics in more depth.

  1. If you were in Anne’s shoes, would you have purchased lumber for your house, or cut trees on your land? Discuss why you would have made that choice.
  2. Think of an accomplishment you are proud of. Think of the work you did and the help you had to make it happen. Write a story describing it in the style of Anne LaBastille. Try to describe things in detail, make the reader feel like they were there with you when it happened. Describe how you felt, what you thought, the sights and sounds of the moment, etc. Anything you are proud of counts! A really good grade, a great musical performance, a time you helped someone out, a win in your favorite game, or finally mastering a new hairstyle.
